Activity No. 10

Determination of Total Hardness in Water

Objective

This activity aims to determine the total hardness in a given amount of water by EDTA titration.

Procedure:

Note to student: To perform the virtual lab, please be guided with the following procedure.

1. Fill the burette with standard EDTA solution up to zero mark.

2. Click on the funnel to place it in the burette to add 200mL test sample.
3. Click on the lid to open and pour EDTA solution on to the burette up to zero mark.
4. Remove the funnel by clicking on it.
5. Add 10 mL of 0.01M calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) solution to a conical flask through a graduated
cylinder.
-squeeze the pipette bulb and dip pipette into the CaCO 3 solution.
-Press the up arrow on the bulb to take the liquid up into the pipette.
-Press the down arrow on the bulb ton release the liquid into the BOD bottle
6. Add 1mL ammonia buffer solution by automatic pipette to the conical flask.
7. Add 5-6 drops of Eriochrome Black T indicator to the conical flask.
8. Record the initial volume., mL
9. Titrate the water sample with EDTA solution till the color changes to blue. Open the knob to start the
liquid running into the conical flask
10. Stop the titration and record the final reading of the burette.
11. Calculate the total hardness in water.

(MEDTA x VEDTA) x 100.08 mg CaCO3/mmole

Total Hardness in water as mg CaCO3 per Li = --------------------------------------------------------------x 1000
V

Where:

MEDTA is the molar concentration of EDTA solution, mmole /mL.

VEDTA is the volume of EDTA consume during titration, mL.
V is the volume of water used for analysis, mL
1000 is the factor for the conversion of mL sample to liter.
