DESCRIPTION OF APPROACH, METHODOLOGY AND WORK PLAN FOR PERFORMING THE

ASSIGNMENT/JOB

a) TECHNICAL APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY

Approach: The approach will be an integrated three-tiered approach, comprising of macro, meso and
micro levels.

1) The macro level consists of Integrating the Ramgarh Tal lake into Gorakhpur city. The lake will be part
of a comprehensive tourism plan integrating the Gorakshanath temple, Buddha museum, adjacent lake etc.
Gorakhpur is also the site of the Nath movement, which has important overlaps with Himalayan
Buddhism. Thus, Gorakhpur could become a part of the Buddhist circuit, maybe not one of the 'core'
constituents of Kushinagar, Sarnath, Bodhgaya and Kapilavastu; but nevertheless an important
denominator in the history of development of Buddhism.

2) The meso level consists of Integrating the Ramgarh Tal into Its surroundings along with the
transportation network leading to and surrounding the lake, the Buddha museum and also the lake on the
Western side of the lake.

3) At the micro level, proposals will target towards two goals: tourism and waterfront development, and
the ecological approach. Tourism will Incorporate attractors to the lake precinct, waterfront development
will Incorporate of urban design proposals to protect and enhance the lake precincts for sustainable
tourism. The ecological approach will consist of proposals to reroute the Inlet water channels so that the
polluted water does not directly enter the lake. Artificial wetlands might be proposed to treat the polluted
water with sustainable means. Afforestation may be proposed to bolster ecological sustainability.

Scope:

1. Macro level:

 Paths: Development of transportation links and Important nodes to connect and segregate
Ramgarh Tal with and from the surrounding districts of the city.
 Edges: Development of edges to prevent disruptive activities from spilling onto the lake precinct.
 Districts: Suggestion for development of tourism areas Including the Ramgarh Tal lake, zoo,
museum etc. areas. Integrating the large open spaces which exist as disaggregated parks.
 Nodes: Suggestion for development of Important foci from an Integrative point of view for
Gorakhpur, centered around Ramgarh Tal lake.
 Landmarks: Development of landmarks to represent Ramgarh Tal as a tourist destination and a
cultural Icon.

2. Meso level:

 Development of pathways to Integrate Ramgarh Tal with Its Immediate surroundings.

 Development of the surrounding precinct Including the Buddha museum, planetarium, zoo, circuit
house, food hub etc.
 The lake of the western side of the Ramgarh Tal Is to be Integrated Into the design of the complex.
 Integrating the high rise housing colonies adjacent to Ramgarh Tal lake Into the design.
 Development of parking Infrastructure, vending zone, local food hub.

3. Micro level:

 Waterfront development
 Development of cycling, jogging tracks and detailed design of local structures
 Development of ecological Interventions like redirecting the drains to the STP and creating an
artificial wetland/DEWATs etc.
 Afforestation for conservation of the lake-bank; and also to create places for local flora and fauna
to thrive.
 Creating sites for activities like water sports, which already exists to some extent.
 Installing landmarks which can be spotted from far awat.
