8. Mr Vik bought some bottles of water at $0.90 each and 12 bottles of fruit juice at $2.30
each. His sister bought the same number of bottles of water as him but at $0.50 each.
She also bought 12 bottles of fruit juice at $3 each. They spent the same amount of
money. How many bottles of water did Mr Vik buy?

Additional cost paid by sister for fruit juice = 3 – 2.30 = $0.70

Total additional cost = 0.70 x 12 = $8.40

Cost savings his sister had for a water bottle = $0.90 – 0.50 = $0.40
Number of water bottle bought by sister = 8.40 ÷ 0.40 = 21 bottles

Mr Vik bought 21 bottles.

Susan and bought another 18 stickers. Susan bought some stickers for herself after
receiving stickers from Angela. Susan then had twice as many stickers as Angela.
Susan had 288 stickers in the end. How many stickers did Susan buy?

In the end, number of stickers Angela had = 288 ÷ 2 = 144

At first, number of stickers Angela had = 144 + 60 – 18 = 186

At first, number of stickers Susan had = 186 ÷ 3 = 62

Number of stickers Susan bought = 288 – 62 = 226

much money as Zachary.
(a) How much money did Willy receive?
(b) How much less money did Yannis receive than Xavier?

Let total money = 5u = 690

U = 690 ÷ 5 = $138
1
Amount Yannis received = x 5u = u = $138
5

Remainder = 690 – 138 = $552

Let 5p + 1p = 6p = 552
p = 552 ÷ 6 = $92

Amount Willy receive = $92

Remainder for Xavier and Zachary = 552 – 92 = $460

Let 9x + 11x = 460
20x = 460
x = 460 ÷ 20 = $23

Amount Xavier received = 9x = 9 x23 = $207

Difference between Yannis and Xavier’s amounts = 207 – 138 = $69

Ans: (a) $92

(b) $69

had $18 left. If she wanted to buy 30 m of ribbon, how much more money would she
need?

Cost of 10 m of ribbon = 7.20 x 2 = $14.40

Money she had = 14.40 + 18 = $32.40

Cost of 30 m of ribbon = 7.20 x 6 = $43.20

Additional money needed = 43.20 – 32.40 = $10.80

The ratio of the number of oranges to the number of apples was 7 : 13 in the end.

a) How many apples did Ali have at first?

b) What was the ratio of the number of oranges to the number of apples at first?
Give your answer in the simplest form.
a)
At first ratio of oranges to apples  7 x 4 : 13  28 : 13  28u : 13u
28u = 252
u = 252 ÷ 28 = 9
Number of apples at first = 13 x 9 = 117
b)
At first ratio of oranges to apples  28 : 13
Ans: (a) 117

A to B, Tank A had three times as much water as Tank B. How much water was in Tank
A at first?
(Round your answer to 1 decimal place)

Let u = volume of water in Tank B at last

Volume of water in Tank A at last = 3u

3u + u = 10.8
u = 10.8 ÷ 4 = 2.7 m3
Volume of water in tank A at last = 3 x 2.7 = 8.1 m3
Volume of water in Tank A at first = 8.1 + 1.045 = 9.145 m3 ≈ 9.1 m3

8
Devi and Hamidah gave a total of 85 books to Sarah, Sarah had 3 times as many books

a) What was the ratio of the number of books Devi had to the number of books
Sarah had to the number of books Hamidah had in the beginning?
Give your answer in the simplest form.
b) How many books did Sarah have in the end?

5 7 8
At first ratio of Devi vs Sarah vs Hamidah  8 : 8 : 8  5 : 7: 8  5u : 7u : 8u
After Devi and Hamidah gave 85 books to Sarah  5u – 1u : 7u + 1u + 4u : 8u – 4u
 4u : 12u : 4u

At last, ratio of Devi vs Sarah vs Hamidah  1 : 3 : 1  4 : 12 : 4

12u – 7u = 5u = 85
u = 85 ÷ 5 = 17

Number of books Sarah had in the end = 12u = 12 x 17 = 204

Ans: (a) 5 : 7: 8

12 cm2. PT = VW. The length of TU is half of UV. Find the area of the unshaded parts.

Let length TU = u
TU + UV = u + 2u = 3u = 6 cm
u = 2 cm

Let length of PT = p
1
Area of PTU = p x 2 x 2 = p = 12
p = 12 cm

16. Mr Tan collected $18 760 after selling some chairs and tables. He sold 4 times as many
chairs as tables. He collected $7672 more of the chairs than the tables. Each table cost
$80 more than a chair. Find the price of the table.

Let u = number of tables

Number of chairs = 4u

Cost of u tables = (18760 – 7672 ) ÷ 2 = $5544

Cost of 4u chairs = 5544 + 7672 = $13216

Cost of u chairs = 13216 ÷ 4 = $3304

Difference in unit cost of tables vs chairs = $80
Difference in cost of u tables vs u chairs = 5544 – 3304 = 2240

Number of tables = 2240 ÷ 80 = 28

Price of a table = 5544 ÷ 28 = $198

Ans: $198

17. Kim Hui had $158 more than Dinesh. At a furniture mall, Kim Hui bought 2 chairs and 5
stools while Dinesh bought 3 chairs and 2 stools. Each chair that they bought cost 3
times as much as a stool.
(a) After buying the chairs and stools, did the difference between the amount of
money Kim Hui and Dinesh had left increase, decrease or remain the same?
(b) Kim Hui had $455 at first. The amount of money Dinesh had at first was 3 times
as much as what he had left in the end. Find the price of a chair.

(a)
Let u = cost of each stool
Cost of each chair = 3u

Cost of Kim Hui’s purchase = 2 x 3u + 5 x u = 11u

Cost of Dinesh’s purchase = 3 x 3u + 2 x u = 11u

Therefore, the difference between amount of money of Kim Hui and Dinesh remains the
same.

(b)
Amount Dinesh had at first = 455 – 158 = $297
Amount Dinesh had at last = 297 ÷ 3 = $99

Amount Dinesh spent = 297 – 99 = 198

11u = 198
u = 198 ÷ 11 = 18
Cost of each chair = 3u = 3 x 18 = $54

Ans: (a) remains the same

(b) $54
