Required Reading for THEA4220/6220, Fall 2021

Plays marked with * are included in the Norton Anthology of Drama, vol. 1, 3d ed.
(of the two-volume edition, not the “shorter” one-volume version). Many of them
are probably included in earlier editions—just check and compensate as needed.
The Norton uses different translations for the Greek plays, but they’re OK.
For each play, the first entry is the version is accessible through eLC. So I’ve also
recommended some editions that you can purchase, and used copies will be
pretty inexpensive. Since you’re not required to buy them, I’m not ordering them
at the bookstore.

1991. This translation is available on Amazon for about $30. I do not
recommend the translation by E.D.A. Moreshead, who died in 1912, or
the version in Aeschylus I edited by Greene and Lattimore (trans. Seth
Bernadete). The translations by Aaron Poochigian (Johns Hopkins UP,
2011) or Ian Johnston (Richer Resources, 2013) might be OK—I can’t be
certain from the “look inside” preview. They will be very different.

This literal translation has lots of good notes and was prepared for
Constance Congdon to use in adapting the play for production. Her
version is available on Amazon (Broadway Play Publishing, 2016)—that
would be OK, but not anything else I see there.
