EC-342: Microwave Engineering

Max Marks: 30
Note: Answer all the question. Write Roll No. and Name on the each pages of the answer
script. Write question before the solution.

1. Find the insertion voltage ratio and insertion power ratio for the network shown in Fig. 1.
The network is to be inserted between a source impedance Rg=2Ω and a load impedance
RL=1Ω. From the insertion power ratio, find S 21 ( jω ) 2 .

2. Find the scattering parameters for the series and shunt loads shown in Fig. 2. Show that

S12 = 1 − S11 for the series case, and that S12 = 1 + S11 for the shunt case. Assume a

characteristic impedance Z0.

3. At reference plane A, for the circuit shown Fig. 3, choose appropriate reference
impedance, find the power wave amplitudes, and compute the power delivered to the
load. Repeat this procedure for reference plane B. Assume the transmission line is
lossless.

4. Find the S-parameters of the 3-dB attenuator shown in the circuit below with the
terminated impedance of 50 Ω.

5. A certain two-port network is measured and the following scattering matrix is obtained.
 0.10o 0.890o 
S    
0.890 0.20o 

From this data, determine whether the network is reciprocal or lossless. If a short circuit
is placed on port 2, what will be the resulting return loss at port 1.

6. Compute the power transmitted (average) and the peak electric field across the narrow
dimension ‘b’ of the waveguide that has a width of 0.07 m and height of 0.035 m. the
operation is at the dominant mode at a frequency of 3 GHZ with a peak magnetic field
intensity of 10 Amp/m at the guide centre. Assume negligible attenuation.
7. Derive the transverse field components in terms of longitudinal fields, in cylindrical
coordinates.
8. Design a microstrip transmission line for a 100  characteristic impedance. The substrate
thickness is 1.58 mm with permittivity of 2.2. What is the guide wavelength on this
transmission line if the frequency is 4.0 GHz?
9. Derive the expression for the power transfer through the rectangular waveguide for the
dominant mode.
10. (a) Why TE10 mode does not exist in the circular waveguide?
(b) Define the dominant mode.
(c)Derive an expression for the attenuation of the TMnm mode in a circular waveguide
with finite conductivity.
