MIDTERM EXAMINATION (First Semester, SY 2021-22)

Professor: Ditas I. Tiamzon, Ph.D.

Instructions: Read and understand the supplementary handout,  SNED1_Supplementary

Handout Understanding Diversity.docx and do all the tasks stated.

A. Summarize your insights here according to what you have read from the handout by
answering each question below (5 points each)

1. Explain the definition of diversity by giving examples.

It refers to being similar, but not the same. All people are humans, but not exactly the
same. In simple terms, it is being unique among other individuals. For example, people would
always tell me that I look like my sister esp. in physical appearances - but when they had the
chance to get to know to both of us, they will realize that we are different, I’m a shy and an
independent person while my sister she is the loud type of person and she is more dependent
than me.

2. Why is diversity important in the present times?

It is very important especially today because we are in the modern world. Diversity is
about being interconnected; we should deepen our communication with other people. It is not
about how we should tolerate things but more of accepting the reality that we all differ from
other people. Diversity can help people to be more open to different people, culture, beliefs
and personalities. It allows us to be collaborative and think of other people too.

3. What are the two dimensions in Loden’s Wheel of Diversity? How can this model be used?

The dimensions of diversity is divided into two; primary dimensions, which is the inner
circle - these are the characteristics of a person that are the mostly fixed; you are least likely to
change them. The secondary dimensions which is the outer circle. The secondary dimensions
are mostly the influences and beliefs that affects a person’s social identity. This dimension can
change the more we learn things. This can be used in diversity, when we tend to communicate
with other people, we learn from them such as their culture and their personality. This can be
used in classroom like understanding that we all have differences but all of us have the same
goal, and that is to excel and learn things – your classmates’ beliefs and religion shouldn’t be a
hindrance, you should respect it.
4. How does diversity encourage innovation and problem solving?

Diversity enhances creativity. United Nations Month is one of the examples. During
my elementary year, every October every room were tasked in one country – we must
decorate our classrooms according to the given country. This showcases student’s creativity
and problem solving, we learn to use recycle materials or bring decors from our own home
so that we can lessen spending so much money. It motivates student to seek out new ideas
and perspective, that can lead to better decision-making and problem-solving. Another
example, if one student is different from the rest of the class – the teacher and his/her
classmate can make adjustments for the student, be a helping hand.

5. What can non-acceptance of diversity do in an organization, especially in education?

Non-acceptance of diversity can lead into miscommunication, hopelessness and

loss of interest. In education or organization, if a person is different from the others – he
or she are more likely to be bullied or experience discrimination that can make him/her
feel left behind.

B. Application: If you were a teacher, what will you do? (5 points each)

Read each paragraph and explain what you would do and why.

1. A parent asks to see you. He demands that you take out the crucifix inside your classroom
because the religion they belong to does not believe in the crucifix. He insists that his child
is being taught the wrong values. How will you respond to the parent?

I will talk to the parent but I will not remove it out of his child’s sight. Why? To
promote diversity, we should learn how to respect other’s religion. I will make it clear to
the child’s parent that I’m teaching the class to be more open and aware different
religion. I will also know his side that what if I’m the one who demands to remove that is
about their religion and he is the teacher, maybe we can meet half way for what is the
problem.

2. You plan a relay game for your class. While you are explaining the mechanics of the game,
one student raises her hand and says she can’t do a particular task in the game because she
has a prosthetic leg. How will you respond to this situation?

I can make some adjustments such as ask her to be the scorer for the game,
observe and score which person or group that don’t play well and who do well. Also, I
can ask her which part of the game she can play (running, walking, skipping, crawling).
I’ll just tell her just do what she can - so that she won’t feel being left behind.
3. During a class election, Gina (an honor student) and Roy (a student with physical disability)
are running for the position of Class President. What criteria will you base your decision on
whom to vote for?

My criteria would be their personalities and skills, a leader must be good

follower too. They should be following the school rules and class rules, they should be
setting as a good example to the class.

4. Suggest some meaningful ways for learners with special needs to learn in the regular class
with their normal peers:
A) If the class is discussing activities on saving the environment, what activities can a deaf
student do?

I can give the deaf student a task which he will segregate the non-biodegradable and
biodegradable in the trash bin. Waste segregation makes the recycling system of waste easier.
After doing the segregation, I’ll ask my student to find things from the waste that he can recycle
and turn it into an artwork. Recycling can minimize the waste being produce. This can help also
enhance the creativity and thinking of my student.

B ) If a student is confused about addition and subtraction symbols, what prompts/cues or

modifications can be incorporated?

I will show her objects that can help her for example having some 5 apples in front her,
if I take away one apple that would be subtraction and if I added an apple, it would be the
addition.
C. Valuing: Create a poster that demonstrates the impact and importance of
acknowledging, respecting, and tolerating diversity. Write a title and explain in 1-2
sentences. (20 points)

One world, different stories

When we learn to accept

things around us, we create unity
and it helps in minimize the gaps in
different groups. We must thing that
being different is good, it doesn’t
make less of a person and being one
together despite of the gap we can
rise as one.
