Activity No. 03
COMING OUT TO SELF
Objectives:
At the end of the activity, you should be able to:
1. understand the process, for a young LGBT person, of coming out to themselves
and others; and
2. recognize and empathize with some of the difficulties involved in coming out.

Procedure:
1. Focus on the experiences of Ian, Tin-tin and Cha-Cha by reading their statement of
coming out to self.
2. After reading their statements, answer the guide questions below.

Ian says: “Why I didn’t tell anyone was because it could ruin my whole life if I came out. I thought
my friends would never speak to me again and my parents would kick me out.”

Tin-tin says: “I think I realized when I might have been about 12 and I tried to deny it because I
thought it was something to be ashamed of. It was a pretty lonely time. You constantly feel like
you’re different. There is a lot of guilt associated with it; you feel like you’re letting your parents
down, kind of. Because you’re not going to give them grandchildren and all the rest…”

Cha-cha says: “I felt like I would be the black sheep of the family and, especially I am a Christian
as well, that I wouldn’t be accepted by my religion.”

Guide Questions:
1. How do you imagine Ian and Tin-tin felt while they were trying to keep their
orientation a secret?
⇒ I think their feelings are heavy for trying to keep their secrets especially from their
family and friends. That should be the people who will accept them whoever they
are.

2. What messages might they have received about being gay/lesbian while they were
growing up?
⇒ If they are in a group of people who are not educated about being LGBT it feels
bad to think that they would maybe grow receiving insulting from people around
them.

3. What was it like for Cha-cha realizing that she was bisexual?
⇒ Cha-cha also get insulted and not getting accepted especially from her religion
that strictly didn't accept her gender. it is also hard to think that her family also will
not accept her and she can be the black sheep of them.

4. What messages do you think had Cha-cha received from her religion?
⇒ Like what I said from question number 4 may be she will be not accepted from
her religion because of being part of LGBT because her religion believes that we are
only 2 gender identity and it is girl and boy, but maybe theres some point that there
are just some people who will comfort her and will try to change you again and back
from your real identity.

5. What do you think helped these three young people to accept themselves?
⇒ For me being who you are and what you are is not a wrong decision as much as
you are happy and you feel so good without keeping secrets from yourself and to
people around you.
