FORMAL INVITATIONS
Formal Invitations are written to invite guest(s) to a formal event like
the celebration of a special occasion or day or programme.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Marking Scheme –
Format-1 mark
Content-1 mark
Expression-1 mark
2. Word Limit =50 words, Box
3. Card Form, Content spread out
4. Written in THIRD PERSON - He, She, It, They, His, Her, Him, Their, Them.
5. Avoid – First & Second persons - I, We, Me, My, Mine, Us, Our, You, Your.
6. No abbreviations used.
7. Keep Centre aligned.
8. One line – one entry (each new entry in a separate line)
9. No punctuations at the end of lines.
10. Presentation in a single sentence OR two (if necessary)
11.Usually, it has only two sentences.
• The first sentence announces the name of the host, the event and
the time, date and venue.
• The second sentence provides information about the Chief Guest.
12. Visually Presentable:
• Use Capitals and Cursives
• Use different font sizes as per the need - Each new entry in a
different font size.
• Bold fonts & Capitals for important entries
• Font size- As per the importance of the entry.

INFORMAL INVITATION
Informal invitations follow the pattern of ordinary personal letters. These
letters are written to relatives, friends and acquaintances.

MAIN FEATURES:
1. Formal invitation must be given formal reply.
2. It is written in the third person – He, She, It, They, His, Her, Him,
Them, Their.
3. Don’t Use – I, We, Me, My, Mine, Our, You, Your.
4. Give date and address on the top left corner.
5. No salutation.
6. Begin with thanks.
7. Not to be signed at the end. (No name, sign etc.)
8. The name of the sender, the host, and event and the time, date
and venue are clearly mentioned.
9. Acceptance or refusal(decline) of the invitation has to be
mentioned clearly.
10. If accepting – confirm the date/time of arrival
11. If declining - give reason.

1. You are Dr. Amit Gupta, an eminent educationist. You have been invited
to preside over an Inter Zonal Declamation competition by Nalini, the
President of English Literary Club of Government Model Sr. Sec. School,
Sector-20, Chandigarh. Write a reply accepting the invitation. (CBSE

2. Your friend, PV Sathish has invited you to attend the wedding of his
sister Jaya. You find that you have an important paper of pre-board
examination on the day of the wedding. Thus, you cannot attend the
event. Write a formal reply to the invitation expressing your regret. You

1. Informal invitation must be given informal reply.
2. It is written in the First/ Second person – I, We, Me, My, Mine, Us, You,
Your (DON’T USE - He, She, It, They, Their, Them, His, Her, Him)
3. Don’t Use – I, We, Me, My, Mine, Our, You, Your.
4. Give date and address on the top left corner.
5. Write salutation- Dear--------
6. Begin with thanks.
7. To be signed at the end (Sign and name written at the end) – Yours/
Yours lovingly etc.
8. The name of the sender, the host, and event and the time, date and
venue are clearly mentioned.
9. Express best wishes at the end.
10. Acceptance or refusal(decline) of the invitation has to be mentioned
clearly.
11.If accepting – confirm the date/time of arrival
12.If declining - give reason.

your close friend to celebrate his selection in NDA. Respond to the

of your friend’s sister during Winter break. Respond to the invitation,
regretting your inability to attend it.
