En 1837 ingresa en el Conservatorio de Madrid, estudiando composicién con Ramén Camicer, piano con Pedro Albéniz y clarinete con Pedro Broca. Pocos afios después su familia deja Madrid pero él decide quedarse, pasando por un Periodo de gran inestabilidad econémica que le lleva a realizar diferentes ocupaciones, como la de tocar el clarinete en bandas militares y orquestas de teatro ademas de tocar el piano en cafés, dar clases y copiar musica. A partir de 1846 su situacion mejora y se dedica sélo a la composici6n, consiguiendo en 1850 su primer gran éxito con la zarzuela Gloria y peluca. Compuso mas de 60 Zarzuelas destacando Pan y toros, El barberillo de Lavapiés y Jugar con fuego. Las Cuatro piezas breves se encuentran en un libro conservado en la Biblioteca del Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Madrid que recoge las obras compuestas expresamente para los examenes del conservatorio madrilefio entre los afios 1857 y 1877. Desgraciadamente, s6lo nos ha llegado la parte del instrumento solista y la existencia del acompafiamiento se deduce por los compases de espera que aparecen en la partichela, descartando asi que fueran simples melodias sin acompafiamiento. Estas pequefias piezas fueron compuestas para los concursos de clarinete del afio 1863, seguramente para los ejercicios a primera vista. El titulo de Cuatro piezas breves y Minueto, Ariette, Intermezzo y Canzonetta para / cada una de las piezas no es original. Estas no tienen titulo alguno y los nombres han sido.’ escogidos por razones editoriales. Para poder rescatar estas pequefias piezas he recreado junto a Ana Benavides la parte de piano intentando aproximamos lo mas posible al estilo de la época y respetando siempre, como piezas de concurso que son, el protagonismo dei clarinete. Pedro Rubio Madrid, mayo de 2009 Francisco Asenjo Barbieri (1823-1894) Born in Madrid, in 1837 Barbieri registered at the Madrid Conservatory of Music to study composition with Ramén Carnicer, piano with Pedro Albéniz and clarinet with Pedro Broca. A few years later his family left Madrid but he decided to stay on there and as a result went through a period of substantial economic insecurity during which he had to do various different jobs in order fo survive. He played clarinet in military bands as well as in theatre orchestras. He played the piano in cafes, gave classes and copied musical scores. Starting from 1846 his situation bogan to improve and he was able to concentrate on composing and in 1850 he achieved his first big success with the zarzuela Gloria y Peluca. He composed more than 60 zarzuelas of which the following are most notable: Pan y Toros, El barberillo de Lavapiés and Jugar con fuego. Four Short Pieces (Cuatro piezas breves) are preserved in a book in the Library of the Madrid Conservatory of Music. This book is a collection of works composed specifically for the Madrid Conservatory exams given during the twenty year period between 1857 and 1877. Unfortunately, the only part of the work that has been preserved is the part for the solo instrument and the existence of the accompaniment can be deduced only by the pauses that appear in the score. In this way we dismissed the idea that these were simple melodies without accompaniment. The Four Short Pieces were composed for the 1863 clarinet exams, probably the sight readings exams. The titles Cuatro piezas breves, Minueto, Ariette, Intermezzo and Canzonetta for each of the pieces are not original. These pieces had no title and so these names have been chosen for purely editorial purposes. In order to be able to rescue these litle pieces | have recreated, together with Ana Benavides, the part for piano and we have tried to simulate as well as we possibly can the stylo of the period while at the same time paying respect to the clarinet as protagonist given that these works are competition pieces.
