The figure below shows a disk of mass M and radius R with a long ribbon of negligible
1
mass wrapped around it many times. Recall, the moment of inertia of a disk is I = MR 2 .
2

The disk-ribbon system is initially at rest. It rolls a distance d without slipping when you
pull on the ribbon with a constant force of magnitude F in the x direction.
A) Define your system and surroundings. What significant forces act on the system while
you pull it? What object in the system’s surroundings exerts each of those forces?

B) Apply the Angular Momentum Principle relative to the center of mass of the disk-
ribbon system to get an equation that relates the rate of change of the z component of the
disk’s angular velocity to the force you exert and the x components of any other
significant forces acting on the system.
C) Apply the Energy Principle to the disk-ribbon system and to the corresponding point-
particle system to get equations that express the disk’s speed when it has rolled a distance
d to the force you exert on it and to the x components of any other significant forces
acting on the system. Recall, that the speed of a rolling disk is equal to the speed of its
surface relative to its center of mass, so, at any instant the ribbon is pulling off the top of
the disk at twice the speed the disk is moving.

D) Use your equations from part C to determine the speed of the disk when it has rolled a
distance d.
