2.1 GOSPEL REFLECTION

Luke 9:57-62

“And it came to pass, as they walked in the way, that a certain man said to him: I will follow thee
whithersoever thou goest. Jesus said to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests;
but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. But he said to another: Follow me. And he said:
Lord, suffer me first to go, and to bury my father. And Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their
dead: but go thou, and preach the kingdom of God. And another said: I will follow thee, Lord; but
let me first take my leave of them that are at my house. Jesus said to him: No man putting his hand
to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God”.
INSTRUCTION:

Reflect on the Bible verse shown above. What is the message being conveyed by the Bible verse
in your FAITH as God’s follower? Write your reflection on the space provided below.

2.2 Module Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be able to:
1. Determine mass, length and density of solid objects.

2.3 Motivating Activity

Let us have an icebreaker before you proceed to your new activity. Since the “ber months”
have started, I would like you to sing the song using the tune of “jingle bells”.

WE CAN MEASURE
12 inches in a foot
3 feet in a yard
Using different units,
doesn,t have to be too hard !

100 centimeters
In a meter stick you know
We can measure anything,
Anywhere we go!
Enabling Assessment 2.1 – Density of Solid Object

Fill up the following tables using the ACTIVITY Sheet given:

(1) Appropriate table depending on the shape of your dining table top
(2) Table 2 for the VOLUME of your dining table top
(3) Table 3 for the DENSITY of your dining table top

So this time let’s take the challenge of performing another activity using your available materials and
resources at home. Our task is to be able to get the DENSITY of a solid object – that is the table top
of the dining table which probably serving as your working table at present.

Procedure:

1. Using a meter stick measure the dimensions of your table top in centimeters. You may
use your ruler or your father’s measuring steel tape if you don’t have a meter stick. Use the
appropriate table given below to record your data.
For SQUARE TABLE

Dimension Measurement in centimeter (cm)

LENGTH (l)
WIDTH (w)
THICKNESS or
HEIGHT (h)

Note: for square the sides are uniform.

For ROUND TABLE

Dimension Measurement in centimeter (cm)
DIAMETER (D)
THICKNESS or
HEIGHT (h)
RADIUS (r)
This is how you measure the thickness or height of the table top……

You may calculate the radius (r) by dividing the diameter (D) into 2:

r = D/2
For RECTANGULAR TABLE
Dimension Measurement in centimeter (cm)
LENGTH (l)
WIDTH (w)
THICKNESS or
HEIGHT (h)

Again, this is how you measure the thickness or height of the table top….
2. Calculate the volume of your table using the formula depending on the shape:

Shape Volume Equation

ROUND (3.14)r2h
SQUARE lwh
RECTANGLE lwh

Table 2 VOLUME OF TABLE TOP

Shape of the table top Volume Equation to be used Volume in cubic centimeter
(cm3)
3. Determine the DENSITY of your dining table top by dividing the mass and volume.
Ρ = m/V

For our activity since we cannot measure the actual mass, we will just assume a mass for
your table depending on the material your table is made of assuming a standard thickness and
an average of 6-seater. Use the guide below:

Material Mass in kilograms

(kg)
Laminated Wood 10.50
Glass 60.00
Hard Plastic 30.70
4. Compare your calculated density to the following theoretical values by computing the
percentage error

% Error = Theoretical Value – Experimental Value X 100

Theoretical Value

Material Density in kilogram/cubic meter (kg/m3)

Wood 670
Glass 2500
Hard Plastic 1300

Enabling Assessment 2.2 – Alternative Home Materials for Activities

Answer the following questions and problems. Use the ANSWER SHEET provided

1. What are the problems or difficulties you have encountered in performing the activity?

2. What do you think are the possible sources of error in this kind of measurement activity?

3. Give your recommendations or suggestions on how to improve the activity.

4. You have a rock with a volume of 15cm3 and a mass of 45 g. What is its density?

5. You decide you want to carry a boulder home from the beach. It is 30 centimeters on each side,
and so has a volume of 27,000 cm3. It is made of granite, which has a typical density of 2.8
g/cm3. How much will this boulder weigh?
