Power & energy

 Electrical power - rate at which electrical energy is consumed or

electrical work is done.

 Unit of electrical power ----Joules/second or watts

 Joules/second =1 watt

 Electrical power = Electrical energy consumed / Time

 Electrical power = Electrical work / Time= W / t

Power & energy

 Electrical power = VI
 Electrical power = V(V/R)= V2 /R
 Electrical power = (IR)I= I2 R
Power & energy

 Electrical energy = Electrical power * Time

 Unit of electrical energy ----Joules(J) or watt –hour(Wh)

 The basic unit of electricity is the Kilowatt hour (kWh).

1 unit = 1 kWh =
1000Wh
Power & energy

Energy = Power * Time

 Electrical energy = VI * time

 Electrical energy = (V2 /R )* time

 Electrical energy = (I2 R)* time

Power & energy

 If one 100 W bulb is kept on for 10 hours, the bulb will consume 100 x 10 =
1000 Watt-Hour = 1 Kilowatt-Hour (kWh) = 1 units (on your energy meter)
(P= 100 W, time = 10 hours, Energy = power * time = 100*10 = 1000 Wh)

DEVICE TIME Energy

50 W FAN 10 Hrs 500 Wh

100 W 5 Hrs 500 Wh

BULB
Total energy consumption 500 + 500 = 1000 Wh= 1 unit
Power & energy

DEVICE NO. TIME Energy

50 W 3 10 Hrs 50*3*10= 1500 Wh

FAN

100 W 5 5 Hrs 100*5 *5=2500 Wh

BULB

Total energy 1500 + 2500 = 4000 Wh= 4 unit

consumption
Cost Calculation Total cost = Total energy * Cost / Unit
Cost / Unit = 5 Rs Total cost = 4 unit * 5 Rs = 20 Rs
QUESTIONS

Q) How much power is consumed by a 100 watt bulb in one hour?

100 Watts

Q) How much amount of time taken by a 100 W bulb to consume 1 unit ?

P= 100 W, Energy = 1 unit = 1000 Wh ,

Time = energy / power = 1000 Wh / 100 W = 10 hrs
Questions

Q) One kilowatt hour = ?,

a) 1 Joule b) 1000 Joules/s c) 1 Unit d) 1000 Watts

Q) If three 100 W bulbs are used for 4 hours , then what is the total
energy consumption ?

a) 300 Wh b) 400 Wh c) 1200 W d) 1.2 units
