INTRODUCTION

As we already studied, the present perfect is a time verb tense used to indicate a
link between the present and the past. The time of the action is before now, but it is
not specified. The speaker is often more interested in the result than in the action
itself.

In this unit, we will review this tense, but in the interrogative form, using the
auxiliary “ever”.

Present perfect tense is used to describe…(review)
● An action performed during a period of time that has not
finished yet.
• Example: He has cooked dinner three times in this month.
● A situation or action that started in the past and continues in the
present.
• Example: My best friend has lived in Queretaro since 2012.
● A repeated action that takes place between the past and now.
• Example: I have visited Rome two times in my life.
● An action completed in the recent past, expressed with “just”.
• Example: I have just finished my job.

● An action which time is not relevant.


• Example: She has read “Crime and Punishment”.
FORMING PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
The present perfect of a verb is formed by two elements: the form of the auxiliary verb to have
(present tense), plus the past participle of the main verb. For regular verbs, it is used the past
participle (base+ed). Ex. finished, started, filled. For irregular verbs, rules should be followed.

The structure for the affirmative form of the present perfect tense is:

For the negative form, the structure is as follows:

Present perfect is used in the interrogative form, in order to ask questions.

The structure of the perfect tense, in the interrogative form, is as follows:

Have + subject + past participle + …?

Have/has: Don´t forget the third person of the singular.

Regular past participles: Formed by adding -d or -ed to the base form of the verb
used.
Irregular past participles: According to their own rules.
Example: Have you visited Norma recently?
SHORT ANSWERS FOR PRESENT PERFECT QUESTIONS

Questions in present perfect are followed by short answers (yes/no) and the verb
have/ has.

Example: Have you changed the motor oil of your car?

Yes, I have/ No, I haven´t.

Example: Has he cleaned the bathroom?

Yes, he has/ No, he hasn´t.


WH-QUESTIONS IN PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
These kinds of questions require more information in their answers.
Wh- questions are who, when, where, what, why, how, how many and
how much.
The structure of these questions is:
Wh- question +have/has+subject (person or object)+Past participle +Complement ?

Who has she met in the party? Martin Henson

How many people have come to ask for information? Only 3 came.
The adverb “ever” expresses the idea of an unidentified time before now, and is
always placed before the main verb (past participle) of the sentence.

Ever is used:

• In questions: Has she ever been to France?

Have they ever met the Mexican president?

• In negative questions: Hasn't he ever been to Asia?

Haven’t you ever eaten Thai food?
