UNCERTAINTY CALCULATION FOR HARDNESS - HBW (2.5/187.

5)

TYPE 'A' EVALUATION OF UNCERTAINTY:

VALUES OBTAINED ERROR (a0 - (a0 - a1)2

NO
a0 (HBW) a1) (HBW) (HBW)
1 198 1.8 3.24
2 195 -1.2 1.44
3 202 5.8 33.64
4 195 -1.2 1.44
5 191 -5.2 27.04
Total 981 Σ(a0 - a1)2 66.8

Mean (a1) 196.2 HBW

Standard Deviation = √Σ(a0 - a1)2 / (n-1)

= 4.086563348 HBW

Standard uncertainty = Standard Deviation / √n

Standard uncertainty = 1.827566688 HBW

Uncertainity due to repeatability = 1.83 HBW

Type B Evaluation:

1. Uncertainty due to the standard block (U1):

From the calibration certificate the uncertainty for 197 HBW

Standard uncertainty is:

= 4.05/ 2
2.03 HBW

Uncertainty due to standard = 2.03 HBW

2. Uncertainty due to Equipment (U2):

The resolution of gauge is 0.01 resolution. Therefore, according to rectangular distribution the
uncertainity due to dial gauge is
= 0.01/ √3
= 0.005773503 HBW

Uncertainty due to Equipment = 0.01 HBW

Uncertainty budget:

Uncertainty components Distribution Taken Standard Uncertainty

Repeatability Normal - Type A 1.83 HBW
Standard Block Rectangular - Type B 2.03 HBW
Equipment Dial Gauge Rectangular - Type B 0.01 HBW

Combined Uncertainty:
Combined Uncertainty = √ (U1)2 + (U2)2 + (TYPE A)2
= √ (2.03)2 + (0.01)2 + (1.83)2
= 2.73

Expanded Uncertainty:

From the Students - t distribution table, the K factor for 95% confidence level is 2
= 5.45551403
= 5

RESULT:

Uncertainty due to Measurement = 197 ± 5 HBW(2.5/187.5)
