Engagement

Student engagement refers to students' active participation in a variety of activities that result in
high-quality learning (GoGuardian,2020). Student engagement promotes online course performance by
increasing student contentment, increasing student drive to study, reducing isolation, and increasing
student satisfaction (Martin, F., & Bolliger, D. U., 2022). Students who come on time, pay attention in
class, and finish homework are more likely to receive higher marks and graduate on time, according to
many studies. Students who do not pay attention or participate in classwork, on the other hand, get
poorer marks and are less likely to graduate on time, according to research. Teachers must detect when
students are interested and work to raise that level of engagement since it has a direct influence on
student achievement (Howard, A. C. B. 2020). Engaging students in the learning process has been shown
to improve their attention and focus, inspire them to exercise higher-level critical thinking abilities, and
foster meaningful learning experiences. Instructors that use a student-centered approach to education
boost student engagement, which helps everyone achieve the course's learning objectives more
successfully (Teaching Washington, 2022).

Student engagement can be divided into three types: behavioral, cognitive, and emotional.

When students actively participate in the learning process, this is referred to as behavioral
engagement. They arrive on time, hand in their assignments, and bring all the necessary supplies to
class. They also take part in class debates, follow their teacher's instructions, and regularly give it their
all (Howard, A. C. B. 2020).

When pupils endeavor to learn as much as they can, they are said to be cognitively engaged.
They not only pay attention in class, but they also ask thoughtful questions and go above and beyond
what you ask. (Howard, A. C. B. 2020). Instructors can use cognitive engagement to better understand
how students learn and whether their earlier experiences aid them with new material. (Baran, E., 2019)

When students have a favorable attitude toward their educational experience, they are said to
be emotionally engaged. When kids treat you and their classmates with respect and approach
homework with hope, you can know they're emotionally engaged. (Howard, A. C. B. 2020).
