The importance of listening

Listen before you speak is a famous saying that makes listening more important than
giving an opinion, but why does listening is important before you talk about your opinion or
when having a conversation? Hi, I’m Abraham D. Arroyo II, an Accountancy freshman student,
and today I’m going to talk about the importance of listening. Picture this, you’re having a
conversation with your friends and you open up to them that you are depressed, then suddenly,
your friends started saying “It’s just in your mind” or “if you don’t think about it, you will not
have it”. You see, based on the situation, that’s one of the main reasons why there are a lot of
depressed people, because people tend to speak first before they think about what they are
saying, they don’t listen with the intent to understand, but they listen with only the intent to
reply.

According to Tengku Bandaria (2016), "listening is the key to communication." It not

only helps you understand the point of view of the people with whom you are conversing, but it
also helps you become a better speaker. With the absence of listening, Many people will have
poor decision-making skills, and many things will get worse and worse until they cannot be
solved. Another reason why listening is important is that it demonstrates empathy to the person
who you're conversing. Especially when the person is mentally unstable, listening to their
problems or simply being there for them can mean a lot to them.

In conclusion, listening is one of the components of communication that needs to be

mastered , it is the element in which we are able to understand the thoughts and feelings that the
other person wants to convey, and without it, we cannot live a harmonious and peaceful life. so
the next time you’re in a conversation, don’t listen with the intent to reply, listen with the intent
to understand.
