TUTORIAL 1
1. Consider the following types of electromagnetic radiation:

(i) microwave (ii) ultraviolet (iii) radio waves

(iv) infrared (v) x-ray (vi) visible

(a) Arrange them in order of increasing wavelength.

(b) Arrange them in order of increasing frequency.
(c) Arrange them in order of increasing energy

2. An FM station broadcasts classical music at 93.5 MHz (or 106 Hz). Find the
wavelength (in m, nm, and Å) of these radio waves.

3. An x-ray has a wavelength of 1.3 Å. Calculate the energy (in J) of one photon of this
radiation.

4. What feature of an orbital is related to each of the following quantum numbers?

(a) Principal quantum number (n)

(b) Angular momentum quantum number (l)
(c) Magnetic quantum number (ml)

5. How many orbitals can each of the following designations have in an atom:

(a) 1s (b) 4d (c) 3p (d) n=3 (e) 5f

6. For each of the following, give the sublevel designation, the allowable ml values, and
the number of orbitals:

(a) n=4, l=2 (b) n=5, l=1 (3) n=2, l=0

7. The work function for metallic cesium is 3.43 x 10-19 J. Calculate the kinetic energy
and the speed of the electrons ejected by light of wavelength (a) 300 nm, (b) 700 nm.

8. Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of (a) a mass of 1.0 g traveling at 1.0 cm s-1, (b)
the same, traveling at 100 km s-1. Also calculate the momentum of the mass in (a) and
(b).

9. A neutral element X has only 1 proton, but its first ionization energy (IE1) is much
greater than that of a neutral element Y, which has 3 protons. Explain.

10. How does Zeff influence:

(a) atomic size

(b) first ionization energy (IE1)
(c) electronegativity (EN) across a period

11. Oxygen atoms are smaller than nitrogen atoms, yet oxygen has lower first ionization
energy than nitrogen. Explain.

12. Draw the counter-clockwise rotation of a XO3 molecule (trigonal planar in shape)
about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the molecule.

(a) C3
(b) C32
(c) C33

13. List all the 5 kinds of symmetry operations and write the respective symbol for each
operation.

Planck’s constant, h = 6.626 x 10-34 kg.m2s-1

Speed of light, c = 3.00 x 108 ms-1
Mass of electron, me = 9.109 x 10-31 kg
