by Wang Meng. The artist uses different types of strokes to fill
up the scroll and creating the lighting and texture. The tightly

serious energy to the piece. Through this piece, I wanted to
incorporate the tightly compacted strokes from the dry-point

me playing around with the ink and how much ink I
used each time I printed my block. I tried to see how
different amount of inks would make the print different

how dark and how much contrast I wanted for my print.
So for the first one I applied a lot of ink so that it was as
dark as it could be, and spread it evenly throughout the
block. However it seemed like I didn't put enough ink at
the edge of the block which is why there is some fading
effect in the print. I continued on with experimenting the ink. For the 4th print, I

pho is unknown, as the first appearance of a pho vendor was in

Pho was created through the influences of France and China who
had colonized Vietnam. Pho holds a special meaning to

abroad, the dish contains their reminiscences of their homeland

finding the angles as there were three different

hard placing the angles as depending on where I

The American Dream: Gouache This was my first time using gouache so I had a lot of difficulty finding a method of blending
Process,Experimentation,Reflection as although it's similar to acrylics and watercolor, the blending component of the medium is
quite different. I had to come up with different types of blending in order to have the
gouache turn out as close as I had in mind. For skin tones and fabric I used the classic
Baroque style blending to get a more dramatic shading on the skin, cloth and house. While
for the background, I used the stippling of dots to create the shading and texture for the
trees and leaves.Overall, I am quite neutral about this project. I did not entirely enjoy using
gouache as they were a bit difficult to use as the paint was more lumpy and it was hard to
mix the colors into the specific color I had in mind. I was quite upset with with the outcome
of the house as I was planning to make it more similar to the house in "American Gothic" but

the inspiration of "American Gothic" can be seen as well as the color scheme from Parasite.

First, I started off by transferring the main figures

from my colored pencil illustration onto my board.I
then started to paint the human figures first. For the
figures, I began with adding a light layer of skin and
contour before using a general skin color to go over
it.. Then I went and color their clothing with the base
color, than put shading by mixing the base color with
white. After finishing the foreground I moved on to
painting the house behind the two figures, which was
a lot of blending. Afterwards I began outlining the
windows and rooftop. Then I went on to do the
background of both boards, the background was
different on both side but I still need the sky to go
from a dark gradient to a light one. Lastly, I worked
on the trees on both side and contoured the tree

The main inspiration behind the self-portrait is "Young Woman

by Lillies" by To Ngoc Van. The painting is one of the most iconic
paintings in Vietnamese art history, as it marked a new
movement of Modern Art in Vietnam. Modern Art in Vietnam was
created through the combination of Vietnamese aesthetics and
elements of impressionism learnt from the West. The portrait
draws my attention in many ways, from the strong saturated
hues used to the use of composition of thirds in the painting that
creates emphasis on the subject. Most importantly the oriental
sensibility attracts the viewer as the subject's figure evokes a very
strong sultry mood yet it balances out with the calmness and
delicateness from the background. My design for my outfit was

I started off by sketching my final sketch for what I

I approached it in a more graphic design way. I mixed the base colored that

For the skin aspects, since I planned for my "light source" in the painting to on the right, so in my logic most of the
shadows would be on the left side. So for the face I experimented, by putting the shadow on the right side in order to
depict the shadow that the bangs is giving the subject. However on the hand on the subject, I tried putting the shadow
along with the bottom outlined line, since it looked weird putting the on the right side of hand. The results were a bit
awkward because of so. For the clothes, I tried out the same method that I did with the skin, but it did not work out
very well, and it looks like a block of random color that just happened to be on the shirt. So I needed to come up with
something different. Since the first technique for the clothes didn't work out, I tried another one. Which was adding
the shadows color to where the creases and wrinkles on the shirt would be at. Which worked way better compared to
what I was doing on the right side of the painting. Adding shadows at the intended creases and wrinkles places,
added more texture and dimension to the pieve.

Looking back, I liked this project as it express a theme that I wanted to expressand it was something new compared to what I was doing before. The
style was more modern and leans a bit to pop-art. I am fond of the the theme, as it was something that is prevalent in the world right now and
there is countless news to it. I felt like I could have made the illustration more "offensive" and 'gruesome" looking in order to express the theme
more, however I still like how it currently look like. The presentation aspects is very nice, the primary colors combination works really well and
stands out along with each other. The mask as the finishing touch, as it really became the focus of the piece since the dimension in the painting is
quite flat. The outlined from Stoffels really pulled the whole painting together, but the color came out more saturated then the inspired piece.

Something that I wanted for all my possible design was something call a
¨Donut¨ outlet that can let any plug be used in it. In this way, it can be use
internationally (since different regions of the globe uses different plugs)
and maximize the use of my design, so that people don´t have to buy
different extension cords because of such a small problem.

My inspiration for this project was to be able to create an ideal

extension cord or outlet that would be able targeted to everyday
families in America and families in underdeveloped countries as well.
For this project, I used my family as the family model that I would
want to design the plug for and asked them what are some everyday
problems that they encounter with the extension cords or outlets.
Then I began laying out a map that would help this product become
the ideal plug/ cord for a family.

Through this interview I was able to learn more electricity problems that occurs in underdeveloped countries like Vietnam from my aunt. In
underdeveloped countries, electricity outlets or plugs can be quite harmful for children and kids . The fact being that since in underdeveloped
countries many of the houses and it´s layout can not support electricity properly or safely. So most of the time, whenever contact is made with
electricity outlets, there is high possibility of being electrocuted which very dangerous to babies and children. So I want to be able to make this
extension plug/cord ¨baby proofed¨ so that possibilities of such problems will decrease. My final design was inspired by Apple and it´s design of
the ¨Homepod.¨ I had always love Apple´s designs in its products, I love the modern yet sleek look that the product have. Although it is very simple
and minimalist yet the technology is very complex. I want my design to reflect such elegance in it as well. What intrigued me to the ¨Homepod¨
was it´s shape and the possible things that I can make it into instead of just a smart speaker.

My first idea was to create a ¨click-able¨ extension cord. I
was inspired by mechanics of LEGOS and wondered if I
would be able to tied that mechanics into my extension
cord.It basically was an extension cord that had the ability
to add or take away how may plugs there is, until it is at
max point of safety. Since the plugs are able to lock in and
out to one another, I designed it so it would be able to
rotate 180 degrees so that it would be easier for the user. In
addition, the cable wire of the extension cord shall be
retractable as that would be more neat and organized.

Putting our instructor Murf´s word in mind of thinking

things can be, I was inspired to create this other extension
cord. Inspired by the Apple design of the ¨Homepod¨
designed by the Apple designer team, I based the shape of
this idea similar to that of the ¨Homepod ¨ For this idea I
was thinking of a wireless extension cord, where the
portable sockets are charged on the wireless charging pad
and can be used separately.

For the first part of this overall project, I made a planning board. I started off by
Process,Experimentation,Reflection
creating a Point of View (POV) map. I interviewed my family and asked them
what they would want in a new extension cord. Then I created an empathy map
that listed things I heard, things I saw, feeling, thoughts and stories all
mentioned during the interview. Using the things they told me, I created a mind
map and a couple of planning sketches to show all of the possible ideas on the
possibilities. I scanned all my sketches and papers. Next I opened up Photopea
and created a new document with the required dimensions. Then I began
transferring my POV statement, Empathy map and Mind map from my scans
onto the board first. I used the free transform option to resize and move the
imagine around. I repeated this for the rest of my sketches and played around
with the program to set up the board the way I want it to be. Then I saved the
document as a Photoshop document and a JPEG and uploaded it onto a flash
drive. Plugging the flash drive into the printer, I then print the document onto a
bigger poster. After printing, I trimmed the poster down so it fits the board.
Lastly using spray adhesive I mounted my print onto foam core.

My experimentation of this project was mostly me trying to comprehend how to use professional editing sites
such as Photoshop and Photopea. I spent most of the time figuring which button does what and what to click to
make the program do what I want it to do or editing the pictures so that the sketches can be seen nicely since
sometimes the scanner goes a bit too light. So I had to darken the picture and add more contrast so tha t the
sketches I drew will stand out more. I try to edit the pictures so that they all match and matches the white
background as possible without whitewashing the own photo. Overall, I think I did a pretty good job especially
with coming up with a new extension cord that could meet all my requirements for an ¨ideal extension cord¨

while still solving my problem. The design chosen for next semester pleases me as well as I think I did a good job of making it
look aesthetically pleasing and practical as well. For my photo-shop job, I have mixed feelings about it as I like the color
scheme, how I edit my photos and the top layout of the board, but I felt like I could have done more on the bottom part as it is a
bit empty. So I could have made the images larger or add more things into the board. My edited photos however came out
pretty nice as I spent the majority of the time editing them, so I am quite proud of them. The mounting however, if I were to be
honest, could have been done way better. I focused too much in lining the printed poster and board in one area that I forgot
about the other so the poster had some paper poking out on the sides. So I had to trim some excess paper.

my socket to be in a shape of a sphere, as I plan for

make could possibly mean that these sockets will
be wireless.
My main experimentation for this piece would be the plastic used for the power strip and the struggles in trying to make the
plastic carton bend in the way I wanted it too. I first began by trimming the middle of where I want it to bend. Since it is the
middle, it is very sturdy, so I had to do a hefty amount of cutting and trimming. However, even though when I have almost cut
through the whole carton it still didn't bend the way I wanted so then I had to think of an alternative. So then I decided to cut the
24 socket carton into two, so that I have two 12 socket carton left. I then brainstormed of what should I put in between these two
carton in order for them to bend and fit in the corner neatly. Which I was then able to find some left over cardboard from
Christmas. Then I used it as the bending part of the extension powerstrip, by hot gluing the two carton on the ends of the
cardboard. Before being the middle of the cardboard strip, which then make it way easier to bend. In general, I am quite
disappointed with the outcome of this project as the handicraft of the piece could have done better then using plastic egg
cartons. But as the pandemic threw us off, it was the best material that I got at hand. I was very happy with creative process as I
was able to add additional aspects to my coord that differentiate it to existing extension powerstrip. I am pleased to see how the
extension powerstrip branched out to be targeted for average families instead of just families who wanted to protect their
babies from electricity. If possible I would like to make a better prototype of the recent prototype with better materials then egg
cartons.

My experimentation of this piece was mainly me trying to successfully use

both watercolor and color pencil in the piece, as I have never incorporated
the two medias together. I had to experiment with diluting the watercolor
paint so that the color was not more intense than the color pencil that will go
over the base. But mostly I experimented the most with color pencil
techniques that was used for the details.
For the first technique, I just tried to get the buildup of the base watercolor,
and three different shades of green which included; olive, emerald and
shamrock green. The results turned out quite nice, however it was very
time-consuming and seemed to work best when used for darker bamboos.

For the second technique, I just used a simple layer of the watercolor base
and one shade of green to add details to the bamboos. I specifically used
emerald green to shade the plants, and shade them using different pressure
on the pencil. This was the technique that I mainly used on the piece as it
was easy to master and not as time consuming compared to the two other
methods.

For the third technique I tried, I used a build up of the base and olive green,
a bumblebee yellow, and some coffee brown to highlight the details of the
plants. I decided to use these three colors as they all compliment each other

Lastly, I cleaned up my edges to make the

on the petals with either dark red or red. Afterwards
I would go in with white to create texture in the
middle of the petal and shade a darker red into the

looked really nice, it was hard to paint the bud on the inside. Theme
wise, which was to showcase how traditional beliefs of how woman must get

theme down with the use of the traditional Vietnamese wedding dress that the
subject is wearing and the roses that are suffocating her. Basing off of my
inspiration, my use of female subject seems quite lacking compared to
Mucha´s, so I will have to come back to the background and add in some
details such as Mucha´s, and for the patterns that were based after Klimt´s can
be emphasized more if I were to add them on the top of the dress.
