Jose:

Hello again. In the previous quiz, you analysed Shaoling in her first attempt answering some questions
for Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test. This time, she will have a second attempt at answering the same
questions. As you listen to her, pay attention to how she improves her responses.

Jose:
Let's talk about birthdays. Do you usually celebrate your birthdays?

Shaoling:
Oh yes. I celebrate my birthdays. I often invite my friends to my home and we listen to the music and
have some drinks. The best part of celebrating my birthdays is getting all the presents.

Jose:
What did you do on your last birthday?

Shaoling:
On my last birthday? Well, as I said, I often invite my friends, but on my last birthday, my parents invited
me to a really nice restaurant in the city. The food was delicious and they had the cake for me. It was
really nice.

Jose:
Do people celebrate birthdays with a party in your country?

Shaoling:
Well, I think people celebrate birthday in all countries and also in my country. Birthday parties are very
common in China, especially for young childs. I think sometimes parents spend so much money when
they throw parties for their kids.

Jose:
Which birthdays are considered important in your country?

Shaoling:
There were many important birthdays in my country, I think, but the most important one is one year old
and when people turn 18, because that is when people considered adults and can go to pubs and discos.

Jose:
Let's now talk about music. Do you like music?

Shaoling:
Yes. I think I really like music, no? I listen to it when I'm on the chain when I go to university or when I'm
cooking. When I listen to music, I feel relaxed so I like it.

What's your favourite type of music?

Shaoling:
I like all kinds of music, but my favourite is K-pop. I like it because the groups sing and dance and they
have very nice video clips online. My favourite group is BTS because the group members are good
looking and their songs are very meaningful.

Jose:
If you could learn a musical instrument, what would it be?

Shaoling:
I don't think I'm very good with instruments, but if I had the chance I would learn the piano, but it is so
difficult. I don't know I can learn it. If it is not the piano I would learn the guitar. Maybe that is easier.

Jose:
Do you think music is important?

Shaoling:
Sure. Music is very important because it makes people happy when they're sad. With music, we can
dance, sing, and be happy.

Jose:
It is clear that Shaoling has improved her responses and there are various ways that she achieved this.
Firstly, she avoided providing short answers like, "Yes," or, "No." Instead, she made sure to develop her
answers with more relevant information. She also avoided speaking too fast, and this time around, she
has spoke at a natural rate, which made her speech clearer. She also used more accurate vocabulary
appropriate to the context of her answers, and she paid attention to the verb tenses, which helped her
give more accurate answers. As for her pronunciation, she was aware of the individual sounds and
consonant clusters that she has problems with and focused on these as she was speaking.

Jose:
In the next two lessons, you will learn more about the strategies and the skills that Shaoling used to
improve her responses.
