ELT III SEMESTER 2020-21 LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name of the Teacher: Shama Bano
Level of Learners: Graduation
Number of Learners: 30
Group of Learners: B.A. English (3rd sem)
Date:5/01/2022 Duration: 50 minutes
Lesson Name: Grammar skills Punctuation Lesson Aim – The purpose of punctuation is to clarify the
meaning of texts. Punctuation Marks Any one of the marks (as a period, comma, or question mark)
used in writing to make the meaning clear and separate parts (as clauses and sentences) is called a
punctuation mark. Sentence Endings Marks (.?!) Three of the fourteen punctuation marks are
appropriate for use as sentence endings. They are the period, question mark, and exclamation point.
Use of Period (.) 1. At the end of the sentence. He use to wire a letter to her mother in his childhood.
2. In command, instruction and order etc. a. Bring my jacket. 3. Periods can also be used at the end
of a sentence that contains an indirect question. a. I have something to ask you. 4. Periods are also
used with abbreviations. a. Washington, D.C. b. U.P. Dr. c. 10 a.m. 5. Although acronyms are
abbreviations, they do not normally require periods. a. If you are using an acronym that is
pronounced as a word such as NOW, NATO, RADAR, or SCUBA, you don’t need to insert periods
between the letters. b. If you are using an acronym that is pronounced by speaking the letters
individually, you may or may not need to use periods between the letters. c. Some examples include
FBI, NBA, NCAA, NAACP, d. The U.S.A., and U.N.I.C.E.F. Question Mark (?) Use a question mark (?) to
indicate a direct question when placed at the end of a sentence. ● When did Jane leave for the
market? ● Where do your aunts live in Mumbai? Exclamatory Marks The exclamation point (!) is
used when a person wants to express a sudden outcry or add emphasis. ● Within dialogue: "Jesus!"
screamed Jane. ● To emphasize a point: My mother-in-law's rants make me furious! ● What a
beautiful city! Rules of Capital letters in English Grammar At first glance, the rules of English
capitalization seem simple. You probably know you should capitalize proper nouns and the first word
of every sentence. But you also (sometimes) capitalize the first word of a quote. Usually, you don’t
capitalize after a colon, but there are exceptions. And what do you do when you’re not sure whether
something is a proper noun? Let’s Learn to Use Capital Letters In English ● Capitalize the First Word
of a Sentence ○ Milk is white. ○ Where should I go for help? ○ Hey! It’s great to see you! How have
you been? ● Capitalize Names and Other Proper Nouns ○ My favourite author is Jane Austen. ○ Tom
and Diane met at Judy’s house. ○ Have you met my dog, Boomer? ● The names of cities, countries,
companies, religions and political parties are also proper nouns, so you should capitalize them, too.
○ New York is a big city. ○ Islam is a religion of Peace? ○ Reliance is the largest company in India. ○
Bhartiya Janta Party is the ruling party of India. ○ Hamlet is a famous work of Shakespeare. Activity 1
Put the correct punctuation marks ar the right place in the given paragraph. Capitalise the letters
where they are required. the prime minister of the republic of turkey was the head of government of
the republic of turkey from 1920 to 2018, who led a political coalition in the turkish parliament and
presided over the cabinet throughout the political history of turkey functions and powers of the post
have changed occasionally prior to its dissolution as a result of the 2017 constitutional referendum,
the prime minister was generally the dominant figure in turkish politics outweighing the President in
the ottoman empire, the prime minister of the ottoman sultan held the title of grand vizier after the
tanzimat period in the 19th century the grand viziers came to assume a role more like that of the
prime ministers of contemporary western european monarchies later, with the ottoman constitution
of 1876 a parliament was established to oversee the prime minister and the prime minister formed a
cabinet with the constitutional amendments that took place during the Second constitutional era,
the prime minister was made answerable to the parliament rather than the sultan

In the 16th century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration, Ferdinand
Magellan led the first expedition to sail around the world. As a young Portuguese
noble, he served the king of Portugal, but he became involved in the quagmire of
political intrigue at court and lost the king’s favor. After he was dismissed from
service by the king of Portugal, he offered to serve the future Emperor Charles V of
Spain.

A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees W
longitude to Spain and all the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan offered to
prove that the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September 20, 1519,
Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one of these
ships was exploring the topography of South America in search of a water route
across the continent. This ship sank, but the remaining four ships searched along the
southern peninsula of South America. Finally they found the passage they sought
near 50 degrees S latitude. Magellan named this passage the Strait of All Saints, but
today it is known as the Strait of Magellan.

One ship deserted while in this passage and returned to Spain, so fewer sailors were
privileged to gaze at that first panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Those who remained
crossed the meridian now known as the International Date Line in the early spring of
1521 after 98 days on the Pacific Ocean. During those long days at sea, many of
Magellan’s men died of starvation and disease.

Later, Magellan became involved in an insular conflict in the Philippines and was
killed in a tribal battle. Only one ship and 17 sailors under the command of the
Basque navigator Elcano survived to complete the westward journey to Spain and
thus prove once and for all that the world is round, with no precipice at the edge.

Marie Curie was one of the most accomplished scientists in history. Together with her
husband, Pierre, she discovered radium, an element widely used for treating cancer,
and studied uranium and other radioactive substances. Pierre and Marie’s amicable
collaboration later helped to unlock the secrets of the atom.

Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a professor of
physics. At an early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a blithe personality. Her
great exuberance for learning prompted her to continue with her studies after high
school. She became disgruntled, however, when she learned that the university in
Warsaw was closed to women. Determined to receive a higher education, she
defiantly left Poland and in 1891 entered the Sorbonne, a French university, where
she earned her master’s degree and doctorate in physics.

Marie was fortunate to have studied at the Sorbonne with some of the greatest
scientists of her day, one of whom was Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre were married in
1895 and spent many productive years working together in the physics laboratory. A
short time after they discovered radium, Pierre was killed by a horse-drawn wagon in
1906. Marie was stunned by this horrible misfortune and endured heartbreaking
anguish. Despondently she recalled their close relationship and the joy that they had
shared in scientific research. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by
herself greatly increased her distress.

Curie’s feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was asked to succeed her
husband as a physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was the first woman to be given
a professorship at the world-famous university. In 1911 she received the Nobel Prize
in chemistry for isolating radium. Although Marie Curie eventually suffered a fatal
illness from her long exposure to radium, she never became disillusioned about her
work. Regardless of the consequences, she had dedicated herself to science and to
revealing the mysteries of the physical world.

Mount Vesuvius, a volcano located between the ancient Italian cities of Pompeii and
Herculaneum, has received much attention because of its frequent and destructive
eruptions. The most famous of these eruptions occurred in A.D. 79.

The volcano had been inactive for centuries. There was little warning of the coming
eruption, although one account unearthed by archaeologists says that a hard rain
and a strong wind had disturbed the celestial calm during the preceding night. Early
the next morning, the volcano poured a huge river of molten rock down upon
Herculaneum, completely burying the city and filling the harbor with coagulated lava.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the mountain, cinders, stone and ash rained down
on Pompeii. Sparks from the burning ash ignited the combustible rooftops quickly.
Large portions of the city were destroyed in the conflagration. Fire, however, was not
the only cause of destruction. Poisonous sulfuric gases saturated the air. These heavy
gases were not buoyant in the atmosphere and therefore sank toward the earth and
suffocated people.

Over the years, excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum have revealed a great deal
about the behavior of the volcano. By analyzing data, much as a zoologist dissects an
animal specimen, scientists have concluded that the eruption changed large portions
of the area’s geography. For instance, it turned the Sarno River from its course and
raised the level of the beach along the Bay of Naples. Meteorologists studying these
events have also concluded that Vesuvius caused a huge tidal wave that affected the
world’s climate.

In addition to making these investigations, archaeologists have been able to study

the skeletons of victims by using distilled water to wash away the volcanic ash. By
strengthening the brittle bones with acrylic paint, scientists have been able to
examine the skeletons and draw conclusions about the diet and habits of the
residents. Finally, the excavations at both Pompeii and Herculaneum have yielded
many examples of classical art, such as jewelry made of bronze, which is an alloy of
copper and tin. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its tragic consequences have
provided everyone with a wealth of data about the effects that volcanoes can have
on the surrounding area. Today, volcanologists can locate and predict eruptions,
saving lives and preventing the destruction of other cities and cultures.

Self evaluation report There were three classes assigned to me by my evaluator Sana Niazi Ma’am
out of which two will be considered. The classes were observed by my two peer and by my
evaluator. The class that I got was BA sociology and BA Urdu students it took place on Google meet
the skills were reading, writing and grammar. Practice Teaching session 1- The first session held on
22nd December which focused the reading skill. I chose the topic reading comprehension with help
of my evaluator I managed make a lesson plan and activities, at the time of class I was nervous and
was not confident. It showed my first didn’t go well. In the first class I took big lengthy activities that
was boring and difficult to complete in a class, so I was not able to manage the time I didn’t engage
students as well. Practice Teaching session 2 - The second class took place and I chose cover letter to
teach writing skill BA students. On 30th December I was nervous but I knew how to manage time I
told students about cover letter and gave activities, in this class I had network issues and I was not
able to continue so I tried to manage. Overall, it was better than previous class. Practice Teaching
session 3 – Third class was scheduled on 5 th January. I taught students grammar skills with the help
of evaluator helped through these practice session. I managed the class well. It was better than 1
and 2 sessions, indeed practice make a perfect. In my case I did not do a perfect job, but it was a
good experience and I liked it when students were participating and interacting in the class.
