Welcome…
When we sit down to plan an issue of Cross Stitch Collection,
we always look at the occasions you might need to stitch for.
As this is our February issue, Valentine’s day is on the calendar.

30
Of course it’s lovely to show your other half how much you care
with a card (we do have a fun card on page 14), but it seems
a shame to limit this to just one day with something that won’t
have a permanent place on the mantelpiece.
So we’ve decided on a more enduring celebration of
romance, and who better to turn to for inspiration that Jane
Austen? We hope you like our Austen-inspired cover stars.
As well as a rather luxurious Valentine, we thought this project
would make an unusual wedding gift or even a present for
a couple who are just setting up home together. The quote
suits so many couples – old and new – and comes from
Austen's novel Emma. Come to think of it, if our rather large
household settles down early tonight, we might just watch the
film version – again!

Oh deer!
The few times we’ve glimpsed deer
in woodlands they’ve seemed so camouflaged
they may well have been in plaid! This gorgeous
one resembles a rather fancy roe stag. Designed
by Priscilla for Futska on Etsy, the subtly differing
shades make this a really absorbing stitch.
It’s best stitched on 14, 18, or 22 count aida.
“I love the idea of using a modern clean
silhouette, and filling it with a pattern,” says
Priscilla. “The hipster vibe got us thinking that
a deer would be the perfect subject! And since it
was wintertime, we thought the plaid pattern
would certainly set the mood.”

Stitched by heart
We love the idea of making something beautiful for Valentine’s Day while
enjoying a traditional craft. Canadian stitcher Christina Pengelly launched
Little Hungarian Hearts as a nod to her heritage, as her parents are
Hungarian and she grew up watching her mum stitch colourful patterns.
Now living in the UK, Christina sources the kits from embroiderers in
Hungary, who are paid fair wages for their work and are mentoring the
next generation of embroiderers to keep these skills alive. Kits include
thread, needle, padding, lavender sachet, chart and instructions. They cost
from £8 each. Find out more at www.littlehungarianhearts.co.uk.

Heart
sampler
Stitch our sweet project designed by
Shannon Wasilieff for a pretty picture that will
add a hint of rustic charm wherever it hangs

O ur delightful mini heart sampler is inspired by vintage

patchwork quilts covered in blousey roses. We think
it would look just the thing displayed above a spare room bed,
piled high with flowery cushions and quilts.
We've added interest and texture to the design by making
the central heart out of pearly shirt buttons in different sizes –
the perfect chance to raid your button tin! ➤

Stitching the design
FOLD the fabric both ways to find the centre and
start stitching here. Use two strands for the cross
stitch, and one for the backstitch.

Assembling the needlecase

1 JOIN the needlecase back to the left side of the
stitched needlcase front with a 1.25cm (½in)
seam allowance. Reduce the seam allowance and
press flat. Place the assembled needlecase front and
back, right-sides together. Place the wadding on top.

2 CUT two 12cm (5in) lengths of ribbon and place

one length in the middle of each short side of
the needlecase, with the cut end up against the edge
of the fabric. Sew around the edge, with a 1.25cm
(½in) seam allowance, leaving a gap for turning.
Trim the seam allowance, then turn to the right side.
Press flat and then sew up the gap.

3 CUT the felt to fit inside the needlecase. Using all

3 TAKE the needle back into the fabric where you
want the buttonhole to end, then between the
fabric layers and out through at the starting point
again. Repeat this step a couple more times to make
your loop sturdy and strong.

4 WITH the spool roll held in your left hand, push

the needle through the loop from the back to
the front, leaving a thread loop at the back.

5 TAKE the needle over the buttonhole loop and

through the loop at the back.

6 PULL the thread tightly, sliding the stitch along

until it is up against the fabric. This is your first
buttonhole stitch. Repeat until the whole loop has
been snugly covered. Fasten your thread between
the fabric layers. Roll up the spool roll and slip the
button through the buttonhole loop.

Tip… Pin-sharpening stuffing

Make your scissor keeper even more
useful by adding a layer of steel wool on
top of the stuffing to sharpen your pins.

the design. The first design in the series, the baby girl
tree, was published in issue 270, January 2017.
The measurements, stitch count, design size and
time are given on the chart. Stranded cotton is used
for both the cross stitch and backstitch, with the
addition of beads. This design contains many small
elements which sit on and around the tree branches,
including fractionals, which add shape and detail to
the bibs, leaves, cars and animals. Careful counting
is the key to finishing this design easily. Although not
large, it is easy to stitch things in the wrong position,
so it may be best to stitch the tree first and then add
the motifs after. There is one backstitch colour used
in this design, but the tree does not have any ➤
