7
RECAP
In the previous discussion, you have learned that a paragraph refers to a
collection of sentences which all relate to one main idea or topic.

Moreover, you have learned the basic features of a paragraph that can
guide you in writing an effective paragraph.

Today, let us talk about the different kinds of paragraph that determine
the author’s purpose in writing.

LESSON

Text type is simply a matter of determining kind of paragraph or text

according to writer’s purpose in writing. Does the writer want to tell about
personal experience, describe something, explain an issue, or convince the
reader to accept a certain viewpoint? By simply knowing the text type or kind of
paragraph, it can help you to select easier or look for the general idea of the
paragraph.

FOUR MAIN TYPES OF WRITING

1. Narrative paragraph, the writer tells a story about a real – life

experience. When writing a narrative paragraph, you should try to involve
the reader by making a story as vivid as possible. This means that a
sequence of action or a clear beginning, middle, and end to the paragraph
must be followed.

Example:
I like to be kind and helpful to anyone who is in distress. At home I am
kind to my parents and to my brother. When my younger brother has any
difficulty in his studies, I help him. I also take care of him if he falls sick. At
school I am helpful to my friends and classmates. If anyone has forgotten their
stationery, I share what I have in spare. In my school bus, if someone is sick but
does not have a vacant seat to sit in, I offer my seat to the person. When I am
kind to anyone, the person is thankful. I feel happy every time I render kindness
to someone and bring relief or happiness to them. I am also very thankful to those
who helped me when I am in a difficulty. My family and friends are always kind
and helpful to me.

8
This paragraph is considered narrative because it tells the author’s
personal and real -life experience about kindness towards other people. In this
paragraph, the author also shares what he feels when he helps someone and vice
versa, that makes the “story” in the paragraph appears vivid.

2. Descriptive paragraph paints a picture with words. A writer might describe

a person, place, object, or even a memory of a special significance. The words
chosen in the description often appeal to the sense of touch, smell, sight, hearing,
and taste.

Example:
In this world, there are different types of people you have known or met,
but some people are really kind-hearted who are attached with you because of
their quality. Words like kind, patient, helpful, loving, understanding are words
we use to describe them. These qualities make a person a kind-hearted one.
Kind-hearted persons are never angry with their enemies and always ready to
help others. They simply wear a smile every time. They are always happy
minded and never get jealous of someone else’s success. Thus, kind-hearted
persons always look like a star. They are always seen in the sky as same they
are seen in our heart. Here, the writer describes kind-hearted persons by
enumerating some of their qualities.

3. Persuasive paragraph convinces the reader to accept the writer’s

point of view or recommendation. The writer must build a case using facts
and logic, as well as examples, expert opinion, and sound reasoning. This
type of paragraph is useful when establishing an argument.

Example:
Kindness is a must-have attribute for every individual. An act of
kindness can make a moment memorable for the life-time. Every person
should have an objective of carrying the quality of kindness. Being kind
with everyone makes you a better person every time. Your kindness will
also help you in your hard times. People will always be ready for your help.
Being unkind to others can satisfy you for a moment, but it may hurt others
for a long time. We should never forget that we also need the kindness of
others towards us. People often make fun of others inferior to them. It is
not right. Being kind to them is the best thing you can give them.

Notice the statement on the latter part of the paragraph. Here, the writer
is convincing the readers that “kindness” is the best thing you can give or offer
to other people, might as well, the author elaborates the good and the bad
consequences of being kind and unkind towards others that can help readers to
weigh the ideas the author presented. Therefore, this paragraph can be
considered as an example of a persuasive paragraph.

9
4. Expository paragraph is an informative piece of writing that presents
a balanced analysis of a topic. In an expository paragraph, the writer
explains, or defines a topic, using facts, statistics, and examples. This type
of paragraph can be seen in business reports, journalistic writing,
academic and scientific communication and the like.
Example:
Respect, also called esteem, is a positive feeling or action shown towards
someone or something considered important, or held in high esteem or regard. It
conveys a sense of admiration for good or valuable qualities. And it is also the
process of honoring someone by exhibiting care, concern, or consideration for their
needs or feelings. Some people may earn the respect of individuals by assisting
others or by playing important social roles. In many cultures, individuals are
considered to be worthy of respect until they prove otherwise. Courtesies that show
respect may include simple words and phrases like "Thank you" in the West or
"Namaste" in the Indian subcontinent, or simple physical signs like a slight bow, a
smile, direct eye contact, or a simple handshake; however, those acts may have
very different interpretations, depending on the cultural context.

Here, the writer uses a precise language and clear organization of

thoughts to explain a concept.

Guided Practice

Identify what text type are the following paragraphs. Write N for narrative, D for
descriptive, P for persuasive and E for expository.

1. Kindness is a simple way to connect with people around us. We interact

with many people in a day. Most of them are strangers to us. We don't know them,
but we can make them love and respect us. It is possible only through kindness.
Your kindness can make you different from the others. Kindness can put a
beautiful smile on other's faces. Their internal satisfaction is also an appropriate
measure of your kindness. A simple act of kindness can help you with feeling and
spreading happiness around you. It can be done by simply praising others. We can
praise them for their look, attire, their language, their behavior, their work, etc.
Being kind does not cost anything instead it provides respect, happiness, and
satisfaction. You will also get their love, trust, and support as well. We all need a
change, but that change is possible only through kindness.

This paragraph is persuasive. The paragraph is convincing the readers to accept

his point of view which is “change is possible only through kindness”.

2. I believe that kindness is one of the most important human

characteristics. It is not that hard to say a simple 'thank you', and yet it can
really change the outlook of someone else's day. My sister once told me, "It
takes more muscles to frown than to smile." I have noticed that just being
10
polite to the people around you can really make the atmosphere around you
more positive. When being polite has made things a little smoother, I can
think a lot of examples of it, including one at the doctor's office, another at
the commissary, and another one on the metro train in Paris. Yesterday, as
I was heading to my appointment at the doctor's office, I entered an elevator
to go to the third floor where my doctor's office is located. As I entered the
elevator, I pressed the button and waited for the door to close. I was running
a few minutes late and I was a little concerned that I would not make my
appointment in time. I noticed an old man entered the building and slowly
made his way to the elevator. Instead of allowing the elevator door to close
on the old man, I held the door open until the old man was able to board the
elevator with me. Even though I was running late for my appointment I went
a little out of my way to help this old man. When he entered the elevator he
grinned and said, "thank you, young man." Even something as small as
holding the door open for the old man had a positive impact on his day.

This paragraph is a narrative paragraph, because the writer tells a

personal experience about a simple act of kindness.

3. Kindness is a unique attribute. It refers to the thoughtfulness

and helpfulness of a living being like a human. Kindness makes people
very polite and generous. It is one of the most significant attributes in the
world. It is a kind of indication of humanity existing on earth. A kind
person is more tend to have friendly behavior with others around him. An
individual who possesses kindness is more respected by society than the
others. Cordiality, courtesy, and mercy are other names of kindness.
Everybody can adopt kindness in his behavior to spread humanity
throughout the world.

This paragraph is an expository paragraph, because the writer tells a

factual information about “kindness”.

answer on the space provided.

1. We always try to make our family meals special so this time we decided to
order every kind of pancake they had and asked that they be served on one big
family-style platter! We took turns digging in and also feeding it to the baby, who
loved them. There was a lovely environment at the table and lots of smiles. As
I was looking around the table, enjoying this wonderful scene, a gentleman at a
nearby table caught my eye. He was eating his breakfast alone quietly, in the
corner. He frequently looked over and smiled as my granddaughter continued
to entertain us all. Suddenly, I had a great idea. I dug out a smile card from the
reserve that I always carry with me and snuck up to the waitress. I explained to
her that I wanted to pay that man’s bill anonymously and that instead of the bill
could she please give him the smile card. Our leisurely breakfast was still going
12
on after the gentleman had left. The waitress came over and told us that he had
passed the smile card on and paid for another table before he left. What was
really amazing though, was that by the time we left, half the room had ended up
paying for a different table! Isn’t that great? ________

2. Generally speaking, respect is a feeling of holding someone or something in

high regard; it always goes together with a consideration for the well-being of
others, admiration of their achievements, and honoring them by exercising care.
However, the expression of respect varies according to culture and time in
history. What could be a sign of appreciation in one country might be considered
utterly disrespectful in another one. In today's international environment, it is
highly important to be tolerant and respectful of everyone's customs and
traditions. So, it is essential to learn what respect actually means to different
people. ________

3. When was the last time you experienced a random act of kindness? Do you
remember how it made you feel? The good thing about random acts of kindness
is when it is practiced, not one but two people actually benefit from it – the person
on the giving end and the person on the receiving end. Random acts of kindness
are potent and extremely important and shouldn’t be limited to only your family,
significant other and few of your friends. By practicing acts of kindness
spontaneously, you have the power to change the way people see and experience
the world. Practicing a random act of kindness is valid and needed in a
progressive society. Here are three reasons why you should practice acts of
random kindness. First, it has power to change the world. Every single person
hopes to leave a legacy in the world. Practicing a random act of kindness is an
opportunity to leave your footprints in the world. Second, random acts of
kindness are essential to our wellbeing. When we go out of our way to bring
joy into someone’s life or make someone’s day better, we feel better about
ourselves. And third, People never forget random acts of kindness. The more
we pass kindness around, the better the world will be for us and the future
generation. Spread the movement today, share kindness and it will find a way to
come back to you. ________

4. Kind-hearted people always pour their hearts and souls into everything. You
can tell by the look in their eyes, their smile, and the good intentions behind
their actions. These people are always there for you, willing to give you a hand.
When you’re feeling sad, they’re the ones who try to get you smile. You feel like
you can lean on them when times are rough. You might call them, “healers”,
“friends”, or even “magical”. Kind-hearted people are always there to hug you
and try piece you back together after being broken down. Best of all, they feel
happy when you succeed and achieve things. They always offer new experiences
and help you see life from a different perspective.
It’s not hard to feel connected to kind-hearted people because they’re just
amazing. They have the ability to touch your heart with their pure-intentioned
actions and selflessness. ________

13
5. Today, I felt terrible. My head was full of problems and confusion. I decided
to take a walk even though I didn't know where I would go. The most
extraordinary thing happened when I was out on this walk. I saw an old man
sitting on a chair. He was a seller of second-hand shoes. I thought he looked at
least 70 years old. He seemed so tired and nobody was buying his shoes. I wanted
to give him something but I had not brought anything with me. Then, a little girl
came toward him. I heard the child say, "Grandfather, may I polish your shoes?"
That old man took pity on her, smiled and he gave her a shoe to polish. The girl
said, "I polish the shoe because I need money to buy my brother a new school
uniform." I heard this and tears came to my eyes. The old man answered, "Oh,
little girl. Just stop doing this. Come with me and I will buy you a uniform." Then
they walked to a market (I followed behind) and he bought her a uniform. The
girl was so happy. She said, "Thank you so much for doing this. May God bless
you." Then she left, leaving the old man smiling. He walked away from the
market, but I stopped him. I whispered in his ear, "You are a hero! Thank you
for your kindness!" As I walked away, I glanced back and I could see him still
smiling. I was blown away by the kindness I had just seen. Someone who had
so little themselves, was able to show such incredible generosity! Amazing! My
own sadness had completely disappeared, chased away by the light of this kind
act. I began realizing that I have a lot to be thankful for. I hope, some day, I can
show my appreciation of what I have by following the example of the old man
who only had a little, but shared it so beautifully with someone who had nothing.
________
