Si Lancang

Once upon the time, there was phenomenal legend from Riau province. It started when Si
Lancang and his mother lived in poor family. They had to work hard to get food by planting rice
in the rice field. They did not have valuable thing in their home. In the small and wooden hut
was their valuable thing they had. But they used to thank to the God for life.

 One day, Si Lancang wanted to leave his home to make happier way in life. He discussed it with
his mother and his reading Qur’an teacher. Both of them suggested him to remember his
hometown and his mother although he had leaved the home. His deepest mother’s wish was that
Si Lancang did not become a rebellious son after getting his aim. Si Lancang promised to his
mother would come back after getting much money and brought her to leave the home together.
Before going out, he was in homage his mother’s feet for having better live. It was sad moment
for them when a son asked permitting for his family’s better live. Si Lancang’s mother had
prepared a pack of Lumping Dodak cake, Lancang’s favorite cake.

Year by year, Si Lancang worked hard. He could get what he wanted to have, much money. By
his money, he bought more than ten trading ships. And he married with seven wives from rich
merchants or families. He lived in the rich home and style without be caring his mother in the
village.

 One day,Si Lancang and his seven wives sailed to Andalas by his largest ship. They brought
luxurious music instrumentals and supplies. The music instrumentals were played by people, the
silk clothes and also golden and silver jewelry were rolled out on the floor. All was done to show
all the people that Si Lancang was a rich merchant

 The arriving of Si Lancang was known by his mother in Kampar, she was so happy to meet his
only child after she had not met for long time. Because she lived in poor, she put on her old
cloth, dirty sarong and ugly traditional cloth. She got in to ship deck of Si Lancang’s Luxurious
Ship. Everybody blocked her arrival at the ship. They chased her rudely but she told hard that
she was Si Lancang’s mother in the village.

 The disturbance in the ship deck made Si Lancang and his wives got down there. Si Lancang
was shocked seeing her recent mother, too ugly and weak. Si Lancang’s wives did not believe
her because they knew that Si Lancang’s mother had passed away. He was so embarrassed with
his wives so he did not admit that she was his mother, his mother was  crazy and asked people to
get her out from his ship.

Si Lancang’s mother was so sad and broke heart. She cried along her way home. Arriving home,
she took her heirloom; it was a mortar for pounding rice and a flat basket. She prayed to the God,
suddenly the mortar was turned around and made the flat basket sway. She asked to the God to
punish her son. The thunder hit Si Lancang’s ship so all his wealthy and luxurious things were
destroyed. All his silk clothes flight and swung so it became “Negeri Lipat Kain” was located in
left Kampar. The gong was thrown away to right Kampar and became Ogong river. The glazed
porcelains swung and became Pasubilah. And then, the flag pole of ship was thrown away and
fallen to a lake, it was called Si Lancang’s lake
