What excitement there was in my young life was provided by my car-enthusiast father and his friends, who ‘owned Astons, Jaguars, Porsches and vintage MGs and Bentleys ~ but no Ferraris. ‘We heard that there were one or two in Jo'burg, 800 miles away, but they were not seen in sleepy Cape Town. (One day an old chap called Me Schmitt passed away. While sorting outhis estate itwas discovered that he had a derelict warehouse, and a car was found hidden away inside. When it was hauled out of the darkness, it turned out to be a Ferrari Daytona. This caused a great commotion among the local car guys, none of whom had had any idea thatthe Ferrari existed. The secretive Mr Schmitt had apparently only ever driven the car surreptitiously at night. My father piled me into his Porsche 356 and we raced down to the warehouse totake alook. The Ferrari was filthy, painted a dull green and missing its badges, but still it exuded glamour and power. Iwas bowled over, and I've wanted a Daytona of my own ever since. Today, as Ferrari turns 75, its cars continue to inspire awe and devotion, and in the pages that follow we celebrate some of the greatest achievements of a marque that has made so much motoring magic.
