Introduction
Research was underdone to find out what type of effect / influence social media has on students at
President’s College. Social media is already sown into every child’s life, but what influence does this
topic have on the children using it? A research was undertaken to bring light onto this matter.

Statement Of Problem
The problem selected was “Does social media have an impact on the students at President’s College?
What impact does technology and social media have on the students and their self-esteem / emotions?
Reason for choosing area and topic
The problem stated was selected because social media already is a part of every student’s life whether for
better or worst. They were students having a conversation comparing each other and themselves to social
media influencers, which could possibly have a negative effect on their self-esteem but on the contrary,
they could also have a positive outcome. I will conduct an in-depth investigation to deduct what kind of
impact social media has on the students of President’s College.
The school of President’s College was selected, it’s an on school live in type campus and it is located in
Golden Grove, Guyana. It has a current population of 189 live in students due to the corona pandemic.
The school was selected because of conveniency, and it would produce the most accurate results in this
case scenario.

Method of Investigation
In order to conduct this survey with the best and most accurate results, the method of investigation chosen
was a “questionnaire”.
A questionnaire is a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purpose
of a survey or statistical study.
The questionnaire has a plethora of advantages such as:

 It is inexpensive / not costly.

 All people being surveyed identities are anonymous.
 It is not time consuming.
 Gives accurate and precise data that has direct relation to the topic.

Dear President’s College Students,

This survey was carried out to find out the impact social media has on the students of President’s College.
It is meant as a collective tool/utility to supplement the collection of data needed for the school-based
assessment (SBA). By design, the questionnaire is inherently anonymous, all questions are required to be
answered truthfully to produce the most accurate results. Thank you for your cooperation.
Yours Sincerely,

Fig 1.0
The chart from presentation of data was effectively analyzed, the graph analyzed was a pie chart which
represents the value of how social media effects different students individually. The question specifically
asked was “Do you think that social media has affected you in an un-healthy manner?”, and various
students gave their own outlook on this question, giving a generous amount of data for an accurate
analysis. From the data gathered, it can be confirmed that half of the respondents do not have a particular
outlook on the matter and 33% of the respondents think social media does indeed have a negative effect
on them, 17% disagree with this, and states that social media does not affect them in an un-healthy
manner, when the students who gave an unclear answer are removed, it can be stated that the majority of
students think that social media has affected them in an un-healthy manner.
Fig 2.0
This is a cluster column orientated in a rotated view, this diagram depicts how social media affect
student’s school life. Each student gave their opinion on the matter which gives enough data for an
accurate, informative analysis. Half of the students say that social media has improved their school life,
33% say that social media has degraded their school life and 17% say social media hasn’t affected their
school life. It can be stated that most students think social media improved their school life, it was a close
debate.

Fig 3.0
This diagram is a bar graph which represents the amount of time students spend on social media. Data
was collected from a generous number of students for the most accurate results. Most of the students
spend 9-10 hours on social media, the next immediate amount of people spends 7-8 hours on social media
and the minority spend 1-3 hours on social media. This has proven that students spend an un-healthy
amount of time on social media.

Findings
From the data gathered, the findings gained / observed, some conclusions were made.
Such as: Students spend an un-healthy amount of time on social media. Social media does indeed have a
negative effect on a student’s life but not as much as expected and on the contrary, it also has some
positive effects on a student’s life, example being it may give some people a confidence boost.
It was also observed that social media has the same amount of influence on student’s life as school does,
this is not particularly good and reflects poorly on students as the information learnt from school should
be prioritize and be the main influence on your own personal knowledge.
Recommendations
Students should overall lessen the time they spend on social media and put more time into their studies.
For those who suffer from a lack of self-esteem / confidence loss should have a social media lock off and
focus more on themselves as people.
