The theme my group has chosen is crime and Violence. From the group theme I
will be focusing on The effects of crime and Violence. I have chosen this topic
because I would like to educate my friends and family about the effects of Crime
and Violence to learn more about it. As a student of English by completing this
school based assessment I will build my vocabulary skills to help me with words
usage, comprehension skill to help analyze information and and writing skill to
help construct better reflection . In this school -based assessment, I will be using an
artifact speech, article and picture that shows the effects of Crime and Violence.
Artifacts 1
Not surprisingly, crime and violence were the major deterrents for people. Many
said Jamaica is “lovely and full of vibes”, but they did not want to be “robbed and
killed” after they worked so hard all their lives. Perhaps this is why the Vision
2030, national development plan, left out the part about retiring?
But, is Jamaica really “the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do
business”? Based on the data over many years it appears we can't live or raise
families safely here. In 2005 the murder rate in Jamaica was 58 per 100,000
people, which made it the most homicidal nation in the world. There was a decline
between 2010 and 2014, but in 2017 it reached a new peak of 60 killings per
100,000 placing it among the top five murderous societies in the world (Orlando
Patterson 2019). By 2018 it was estimated that 169 people were murdered per
100,000 in Kingston.
This level of rampant violence over many years has wreaked havoc on the daily
lives of us all and robbed our country of the urgent economic and social
development we crave. Data shows that crime costs Jamaica 4.0 per cent of our
gross domestic product (GDP) or $100 billion, using conservative estimates (Inter-
American Development Bank 2014). This money would help fix our inadequate
public hospitals.
Solving our crime problem will not happen next year, nor will it happen with
undimensional, partisan, emotional, tone deaf, ensiled approaches intended to
benefit a few. There are four problems to be tackled simultaneously:

such as depression or anxiety-related illness
While the short-term effects of crime can be severe, most people don’t suffer any long-term
harm. Occasionally, people do develop long-term problems, such as depression or anxiety-
related illnesses, and a few people have a severe, long-lasting reaction after a crime, known as
post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However you’ve been affected, we can give you
information and support to help you recover. Find out more about how crime can impact on your
health.
Some people are surprised at just how emotional they feel after a crime. These strong emotions
can make you feel even more unsettled and confused.
A lot of people feel angry, upset or afraid after experiencing crime, but people will react in
different ways.
1. The type of crime
If you are the victim, this can make you feel powerless and vulnerable.
This can be even more difficult to deal with if the crime is repeated or ongoing, which is often
the case with domestic violence or racial harassment. It’s also a big issue for hate crimes when
you know, as the victim, that you’ve been singled out because of who or what you are
Everyone is different and will therefore crime will affect them in different ways. The main thing
is to understand that any changes in how you feel could be a result of the traumatic experience
you’ve been through.
One of the things that can make a crime really hard to cope with is knowing that it was done
deliberately by another person. Unlike an accident or illness, people who commit a crime intend
to cause some sort of harm.
The effects of crime can also last for a long time, and it doesn’t depend on how ‘serious’ the
crime was. Some people cope really well with the most horrific crimes while others can be very
distressed by a more minor incident.
WRITTEN REPORT
This S.B.A started with our teacher explaining the difference section of the
ENGLISH S.B.A. Once we fully understand, we select our group members and

to grasp the concept of the articles by just reading it once. Outcomes of the research were very
positive and improved with the help of my teacher and my fellow group members. Our
knowledge on the topic of crime and violence in Jamaica was also widened and improved also
