Creative writing is writing that includes a degree of creativity and (not always but often)

invention. This does not always mean the content of a piece of writing but how writing
about that topic was approached.

Most creative writing courses or degrees deal with writing fiction. Some also will include
‘creative non-fiction’.

Creative non-fiction is an umbrella term for several genre. For example essay writing (not as
in school or university assignment essay) as a literary and journalistic genre.

This form is based on facts but told in a vivid and creative way that resembles a well told
story - compared to a much less flowery report.

Also included into creative non-fiction is ‘life writing’. This means biography, memoir and
autobiography. While biography is based on facts but also told like an interesting story,
memoir and autobiography isn’t about exact facts but about how they are remembered.
Creative writing is both. When you write, you are creating something, just like an artist with
his paint brush, depending on how good you are , will determine what you create.

You are essentially creating a story, so tell it in detail and sprinkle some magic on it. The
purpose of writing is to write about what hurts in detail.
Creative writing definitely includes both fiction and non-fiction. With non-fiction, much of the
creativity is in how you organize and present the material.
