method.
d. Assignment Answers:
• The research materials for this Assignment may be sourced from academic journal
articles or cases retrieved from the UTAR library database (e.g. Westlaw, Scopus,
Science Direct, Proquest, Ebscohost).
• It may also be from Google Scholar, CLJ legal network, Lexis-Nexis, and other law-
related professional magazines or publications.
• Opinions of authors as found in law textbooks may also be a source of reference.
• Any cases referred to must have the full citation in-text, e.g. [1967] 1 MLJ 101. The
APA referencing style may be used.
QUESTION 1
• This Assignment aims to help students develop the skills to read law reports to understand
how disputes are decided upon by the courts and the lessons to be drawn from each case.
• Each Group Representative must register their Group members first at the WBLE "Link
to Register Assignment Group".
• Then each group will be given the name of one (1) law report to look for and retrieve from
the Westlaw database (available at the Utar library online database). Do not look for your
own law report.
• Required: Provide a write up on your review of the law report. For example:
i. Summarise in your own words the dispute (what the parties were fighting over).
ii. Briefly describe the topic, sub-topic or area of law that the law report covers.
iii. Briefly describe or summarise, in your own words, the main points covered by the law
report or the legal issues involved.
iv. Summarise the court's decision(s) and reasons.
v. Give your own comments or reflection on the case in the law report. For example:
▪ Explain the connection between the court's decisions and any legal principles that
you have learnt.
▪ Identify the lessons to be learnt from that case: For example, how the parties could
have done things differently or what precautions or steps they should have taken.
• Use single spacing, Times News Roman 12 and divide your write-up into different
paragraphs.
Marking Criteria:
2 The write-up contains students' own comments or reflection on the case in 10 marks
the law report. For example:
▪ Students explain the connection between the court's decisions and any
legal principles that they have learnt.
▪ Students identify the lessons to be learnt from the case: For example,
how the parties could have done things differently or what precautions
or steps they should have taken.
QUESTION 2
• Each Assignment group shall arrange with another assignment group (within the same
tutorial group) to conduct an Oral Quiz at Microsoft Team or Zoom.
▪ Apart from just answering the questions, the candidates must be able to elaborate
further, i.e. give additional points, illustrations or examples that show that they have
studied the Topics extensively and deeply understand the contents of the Topics.
▪ As for the examiners, they are encouraged to send their questions to the Lecturer first,
in case their questions are too simple, too straightforward and not suitable to test the
candidates.
▪ All members of an "examiner" group are strictly prohibited from disclosing or leaking
out their questions to the "candidate" group. Marks will be deducted if it is clear from
the video that the whole session has already been well-rehearsed by both groups and
the entire session is a sham.
• All students are required to turn on their camera and microphone throughout the oral Quiz
session. Marks will be deducted for any group with member(s) who fail to do so.
• The period of oral Quiz session: Week 7 to Week 10
