PET LOSS: AN APHONIC GRIEF

BY: XYZA JOY MANOCDOC

“It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch.” – Anonymous

Why is the death of a pet so heartbreaking? Many of us have a strong

attachment to our animal companions. For us, a pet is more than "just a
pet" but a precious four-legged family member who brings us company,
laughter, and joy. A pet may help you overcome setbacks and problems in
life, offer structure to your day, keep you active and sociable, and even
provide a feeling of meaning or purpose. So, when a beloved pet dies, it's
natural to be struck with sadness and loss.

The mourning process is a slow one. It cannot be hastened or pushed, and

there is no "typical" mourning timeline. After a few weeks or months,
some people begin to feel better. For others, the mourning process lasts
years. Whatever your mourning experience, it is critical to be patient with
yourself and allow the process to develop organically. It is natural to feel
upset, surprised, or lonely after losing a cherished pet. Exhibiting these
sentiments does not imply that you are weak or that your feelings are
misdirected. It just implies that you are mourning the loss of a beloved
animal, and you should not feel guilty. The agony of loss may be
overpowering, eliciting a range of painful and challenging emotions.
While some others may not comprehend the intensity of your feelings for
your pet, you should never feel guilty or humiliated over your loss of an
animal companion. While everyone grieves differently, the depth of your
grief is typically affected by factors such as our own age and personality,
our pet's age, and the reason of their death. In general, the greater the
importance of your pet to you, the more severe your mental sorrow.

A pet is a true gift that may transform your life and provide you enormous
happiness and appreciation. Pets teach you to be responsible, patient,
kind, disciplined, playful, and, most importantly, genuinely love. Even
though your dog chews your couch, scrapes your doors, and eats every
sock you possess, you find a way to share your house and heart with your
buddy. People who have never had a pet may not comprehend your loss
and may reject your sentiments while you go through the mourning
process, but don't let them. It is normal to feel saddened by a pet's death.
Grief has no schedule or constraints. Everyone grieves in various ways and
for varying durations of time. Your amount of grieving may be affected by
your age and personality, your pet's age and personality, the
circumstances of your pet's death, and your bond with your animal.
