Section 1 Introduction

Working Principle

Smart transmitter mainly consists of sensor and circuit board. The sensor is mainly with pressure
sensitive component, AD switching circuit, temperature sensor and parameter memory EEPROM.
The circuit board is composed of ultra-low power microprocessor, AD signal converter and HART
digital communication chips to convert pressure signal into 4~20mA DC.
Smart transmitter working principle:

Sensor

Sensitive component: The isolated diaphragm and filling oil transfer medium pressure to
measuring diaphragm of & chamber center. The measuring diaphragm is a tight and elastic
component, which is mainly to measure its own differential pressure. The displacement and
differential pressure are directly proportional, with the largest displacement of 0.004 inch
(0.10mm). With the changes of sensor differential pressure, the capacitance C1, C2 between
measuring diaphragm and fixed board also change, which converted by signal conditioner to
voltage signal, then processed by highly precise ADC converter to digital signal for the follow-up
processing.

1
Temperature sensor: Measure the working medium temperature of pressure sensor, then convert
it to digital signal for microprocessor to digital temperature compensation.
Characteristic EEPROM: Save transmitter temperature compensation, sensor characteristic
curve and data, digital fine-tuned data and others. Even though power is off, the data is still
completely stored in the memory.

Circuit Board

● Microprocessor: It mainly controls transmitter’s operation, with AD switching circuit and

temperature sensor to detect working pressure and medium temperature of pressure sensitive
component. It works out working medium pressure value to send to D/A converter and HART
communication through linearizing processing and compensated calculation of characteristic
EEPROM, realizing no influence on transmitter output even with the circuit board and sensor
interchange. Besides, it can also calculate transfer functions and engineering unit, exchange
measuring range, adjust damp and diagnose by itself.
● Memory EEPROM: Save all configuration data which adjusted through remote and local ways.
Even though power is off, the data is still completely stored in the memory.
● D/A Converter: It converts adjusted pressure digital signal into 4~20mA DC to send to output
circuit.
● HART Communication: The digital communication circuit provides interface between
transmitter and HART manipulator or control system. It detects FSK signal which added on
4~20mA DC circuit, the sending part also adds it to 4~20mA DC circuit.

Section 2 Installation

Mounting Requirements

Refer to Figure 2-1 for examples the following mounting configurations:

Liquid Flow Measurement

● Place taps to the side of the line to prevent sediment deposits on the transmitter’s process
isolators.
● Mount the transmitter beside or below the taps so gases can vent into the process line.
● Mount drain/vent valve upward to allow gases to vent.

Gas Flow Measurement

● Place taps in the top or side of the line.

● Mount the transmitter beside or above the taps so liquid will drain into the process line.

Steam Flow Measurement

● Place taps to the side of the line.

● Mount the transmitter below the taps to ensure that the impulse piping will stay filled with
condensate.
● Fill impulse lines with water to prevent the steam from contacting the transmitter directly and to
ensure accurate measurement start-up.

NOTE:
In steam or other elevated temperature services, it is important that temperatures at the coplanar
process flanges not exceed 250°F (121°C) for transmitters with silicone fill or 185°F (85°C) for
inert fill. In vacuum service, these temperature limits are reduced to 220°F (104°C) for silicone fill
and 160°F (71°C) for inert fill.

Commissioning on the bench with HART

Commissioning consists of testing the transmitter and verifying transmitter configuration data.
You may commission transmitters either before or after installation. Commissioning the
transmitter on the bench before installation using a HART-based communicator or AMS ensures
that all transmitter components are in good working order and acquaints you with the operation of
the device.
To commission on the bench, connect the transmitter and the communicator as shown in Figure
2-2.
For 4–20 mA transmitters, you will need a power supply capable of providing 14 to 45Vdc at the
transmitter, and a meter to measure output current.
