INTRODUCTION A Bus ticketing system is the automation of the manual processes carried out by all the stakeholders involved. These manual process of booking tickets involves taking the journey to the physical ticketing office and making the purchase with the assumption that there is a bus on the day of your travel. ISSUES FACED This process is presented with challenges including: - Long journeys to the ticketing office - Assumptions on whether or not one will get a seat - No correct information concerning the timings of the bus - Lack of communication on any changes by the bus company AUTOMATION We are therefore presenting a new way through which all these issues are addressed. We have automated the ticketing service by creating robust systems that operate in realtime. We have created a system that enables the customers/passengers to book tickets online through the web or app on the phone without the need of going to the ticketing office. This system will have realtime information for both the passenger and the administration office The passenger will access the system through the web/app and search for the bus company they would want to travel with and then conduct a search CONT. • For the date they would like to travel (Automatically the system will return information based on availability and the time the bus departs) and they will select from the list the time they are comfortable with. • They will proceed and enter their details including Name, ID/PP number, number of passengers and then select a vacant seat to make the reservation. This information will automatically be shown on the admin side and the seatwill be reservaed immediately to ensure no one else books the same seat. • The last part of the ticketing is the payment option which will have various payment platforms like Telebirr, CBE Birr, Ebirr etc. (We have began the process of partnering with the above mentioned). Once payment is made then a verification code and an electronic ticket is issued to the passenger with all the details entered. • On the day of travel, the passenger will present the electronic ticket to the bus conductor and board the bus. This process is entirely realtime as the passenger will access the ticketing system remotely while the system updates the admin side/system. BUS COMPANY • The administration will be responsible for the coordination between the system and passengers • System will be responsible for creating a realtime seat reservation confirmation upon payment. • Confirm receipt of the payment and issue an electronic ticket and a verification code to the phone of the passenger to include even those without smart phones. The verification code Is used as a ticket number and will be referencing the ticket purchased by the passenger • Communicate to the passengers through email or text or call should there be any changes or announcements regarding the bus booked. PAYMENT COMPANY • The payment company will provide platform for payment by the passengers and to the bus company to facilitate ease of ticket reservation. • Payment verification will be bound by time (for passengers who would like to make the payment later). We will have time limits on the verification like 2 hours after reserving the passenger has to make payment failure to which the seat will be released back into the system as vacant. This will apply only for future tickets since the tickets for that same day travel will require immediate payments. • Bus company policy regarding cancellation after payment or no-show will be discussed and agreed upon and the system will be configured as such. USSD CODE • We are also incorporating the use of ussd codes which will enable the system to be accessible by users without smart phones or in the event that there is no internet connectivity. • This will be used by everyone and will provide the most basic information to the passenger for filling in. The verification code will be generated at the end of the process and payment completed but not an electronic ticket. • This will ensure all users are factored in. • Bulk messages will be sent to the passengers using the ussd code for any communication from the bus company. This includes: • - Promotions • - Offers • - Announcements • - Holiday Wishes etc BENEFITS • Time saving • Reduces the number of physical visits to the ticketing office • Increases security through identification of every passenger • Retention of passenger information for easier reference and ticketing • Reduces problems between passengers and the bus company through communication of any changes • Creates customer loyalty through interaction and feedback • Creates order at the bus terminusbyhaving those who booked online walk straight to the bus conductor for admission • Creates accountability of funds since the system keeps track of all money received and produces reports for the management. • Seeks to create a technological platform through which the company can advertise new products, new routes, new offers, discounts or hike in prices with reasons.
