Writing Assignment #1 : Summary

1. Does the summary have a unique title? Does it get your attention? Is it clearly related to the
subject of the original article?

2. Does the summary begin with a thesis statement that provides the author, title, date, and place
of publication and also the main thesis of the original article? What does the thesis statement put
forward as the overall argument/topic/subject of the original article?

3. Are the original author’s supporting points clearly, concisely and responsibly summarised in the
order that they appear in the original article? Is there too much detail in some paragraphs?

4. Are sentences well connected using transitions or are the sentences choppy without logical
connectors?

5. Does the summary contain any of the writer’s opinions or does it present the original author’s
ideas accurately and unemotionally? If there is some bias, is this explicit or implicit?

6. Does the writer repeat the original author’s name using different expressions and reporting
verbs in order to remind the reader that ideas are the original author’s and not the summary
writer’s? Are there a variety of reminder phrases or are the same expressions repeated?
7. Is the essay correctly formatted using MLA (double-space, 12 size font, header, etc.)

8. List any grammatical or syntactical issues that you think need to be revised in the essay.
