DOCTOR KWAK’S REVEALLING THE TRUTH
(Viu-Episode 35; 03:28)
A. Introduction
A doctor should be responsible in disclosing the
treatment process that was done to a patient to the
guardian and relatives of the patient. It is their right
to know that happened in the process of
medication. This should be the process before and
after the medical process was completed.
At the beginning of episode 31 (03:28), Dr.
Song Eun-Jae and Dr. Kwak Hyun is having a
conversation about disclosing the truth in the
treatment of the patient to the guardian. In the
previous episode, the mother of the patient went
through a caesarean delivery to her child. And
Doctor Song was the one that perform the
caesarean delivery. However, she is a surgeon, and
the people and the mother of the baby is blaming
her for what happen to the baby. On the other hand,
Dr. Kwak Hyun is the one in charge for the baby’s
treatment after the delivery of the mother. That is
why; if there is any question about the treatment
process that was did on the patient Doctor Kwak is
the one responsible to answer the question.
However, Doctor Song is the one that was
questioned and take the responsibility of what
Doctor Kwak did.
Moreover, the hospital ship is experiencing a
crisis for what happened and Doctor Song do not
want Doctor Kwak to be involved in the issue
about the treatment of baby for the reason that this
may lead to the fall of the hospital ship. However,
Doctor Kwak felt that he is the one responsible for
what happened and nee to tell the truth. With that
Doctor Kwak gives his statement to the detectives
that he is the one that treated the child since the
delivery.
B. Presenting Arguments To Support The Thesis
Argument 1:
As mentioned in the book of Code of Medical
Ethics, Article 10 that, “An essential element of
information is to let know patients or their relatives
the identity of the physician responsible for their
care process, as well as the ones assisting them at
all times” and in Article 2 Sectio1 “The physician
has a duty to attend the call from judges and courts;
he/she shall assist public administration in those
matters which, within his/her authority, redound to
the common good “[1].
Doctor Kwak mentioned that he should follow
the rule that is why he is telling the truth to the
investigators that he is the one that treated the child
after the delivery and Doctor Song only, did the
surgical method for the caesarean delivery. Also,
did the suction process that was questioned by the
investigators.
C. Presenting Objections To The Thesis
Objection 1:
Revealing the truth can result into damnation of
others, according to Thomas P. Plante, that
“sympathy to other might imply that lying is the
right ethical thing to do” [2].
Doctor Song ask Doctor Kwak whether he is
sure about his decision in disclosing the truth
behind what happened in the hospital ship. In
addition, she mentioned that this may lead to the
decommissioning of the hospital ship and might
stop operating forever. Doctor song is just thinking
for the greater good, which she will be the only one
that will suffer in the current situation and the crisis
at the hospital ship will not be added by Doctor
Kwak telling the truth.
D. Response To Objections To The Thesis
Response to Objection 1:
In accordance to the Code of Medical Ethics
Article 23 Section 4, that “Doctors with
responsibilities in management and resource
management will act always guided by the
common good and equity. They have an ethical
duty of honesty and exemplary” [1]. This only
proves that disclosing the fact is in the rule of being
a Doctor. In line with that, Doctor Kwak’s action
is right referring to that medical ethics and he gives
the relatives the right to know what is the truth
behind the operation.
In addition, because of the act that Dr. Kwak did,
he able to helped Dr. Song which is suffering for
all the blame of the public citizen and the relatives
for what happened to the patient. Moreover, this is
relatable to the medical ethics Article 7 Section 1
which states that “Physicians should treat each
other with due deference, respect, loyalty, whatever
the hierarchical relationship between them. They
have an obligation to defend a colleague who is
under attack or unfair complaints” [1].
E. Conclusion
In a nutshell, whatever profession we are into, a
need of following the code of ethics is the number
one priority for professionals. This may be the
cause for in employment but doing things honestly
and with integrity shows that a well-being is
professional and knows the right thing to do in any
situation or condition. This includes the
responsibility in disclosing the truth to the relative
if the patient and protecting the subordinates when
they are under attack of wrong complaints. This
kind of ethics is possessed by Dr. Kwak which has
a passion in his profession and having a pride as a
Doctor.
II. A CHOICE BETWEEN THE JOB AND THE
HOSPITAL

A. Introduction
Decision making is a part of any job; this will
decide one’s fate. It is very important for the
leaders of the organization or management to make
a choice on what to sacrifice for what is good.
In episode 37, the Director of the Geoje Jeil
Hospital, Doctor Kim Soo Kwon is undecided
whether to let Doctor Song Eun-Jae to operate the
patient or keep the agreement between him and
Doosung. The arrangement between the chairman
of Doosung Company and the director was about
the development of Geoje Jeil Hospital. Also, the
group will fund the hospital but in one condition.
This condition is to eliminate Doctor Song from the
hospital. On the day, Dr. Song has packed her
things following the order of Director Kim. As she
is leaving the hospital she saw Mr. Chu the
administrator in the hospital ship is with his wife
going in the hospital because of emergency and Dr.
Song rushes to thee ER and assess the condition of
Mr. Chu’s wife. However, she is disobeying the
order that was given to her by the Director to stay
away from the ER. The replacement of Dr. Song
handled the patient.
In the evening, the condition of the patient is
getting worse and need to be operated immediately.
However, there are no other surgeons that can do
the liver transplant on the patient other than Dr.
Song. This situation leads Director Kim to make a
choice between the hospital or the job as a doctor.
B. Presenting Arguments To Support The Thesis
Argument 1:
It is stated in the Code of Medical Ethics
chapter 2 General Principles Article 5 Section 1
that “The medical profession is at the service of
mankind and society. Respecting human life,
dignity and healthcare of the individual and the
community are the primary duties of the physician”
[1].
With this statement in the Code of Ethics, it is duty
of the Director to provide healthcare for an
individual and community. With that, Director Kim
will let Doctor Song to perform the operation on
the patient. In addition, Dr. Song is begging to the
director that she want to save the life of the patient
and asking for his permission to perform the
medical process.
C. Presenting Objections To The Thesis
Objection 1:
According to website Gender Action Portal, “ a
collective competitive civilization can further
willingly direct people making ethical conciliations
in their choice of decision, that is, making choices
that sacrifice moral values for financial or social
standing achievements”[3]. This may be considered
in the decision making of the director.
Director Kim have an agreement with Doosung
Company to fund their hospital for the reason that
they are not gaining profit because most of the
times the patient do not pay for their expenses at
the hospital. Moreover, this arrangement with the
Doosung Group would develop the hospital facility
and increase the building of the hospital.
D. Response To Objections To The Thesis
Response to Objection 1:
Director Kim has the right to decide whether he
will take the offer of the Doosung Group or let
Doctor Song to perform the operation. However, it
is indicated in the Code of medical ethics that “The
Medical Association assumes as one of its main
objectives the promotion and development of
professional ethics. It devotes special attention to
disseminate the provisions of this Code. It shall be
required to enforce them and the Medical
Association will try to modify any legal provision
of any law opposing them” [1]. With that stated in
the Code of Medical Ethics, Dr. Kim decides on the
situation ethically and follow the code of ethics.
The Director, let Dr. Song to do the operation and
it was a success.
E. Conclusion
In conclusion, as a professional we should make
decisions ethically. Also, having a choice is natural
in a life of person but, making a choice can make
difference. This only shows that practice of
medical profession also consider ethics as a
foundation of decision making. Likewise the
decision making of Director Kim in this episode.
