Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
A wise king had a son who was very foolish. The time had come for the king to name
his heir .But he could not name an unwise son as his successor .So, he decided to take the
advice of his wisest minister. The minister thought for a while and said, “ Name your
foolish son as the heir. At the same time ,find him a wise wife. She will help him to rule
wisely”. The king was delighted
and set out to find the wisest girl of his land. The king now chalked out a plan. He asked
his artisans to build a beautiful temple, leaving out just one thing………The image of
Buddha. Once the temple was completed, the king invited all the girls to come and offer
their prayers. The girls came from the four corners of the kingdom to pray, secretly
hoping to marry the prince. But none of them noticed that the image of the Buddha was
missing.
On the fourth day , an old shepherd and his daughter arrived at the temple. The old
man began to pray, but his daughter stopped him. “Father there is no holy image in the
temple .Your prayers will not be answered”. The king’s men who were on guard
reported this to the king who was impressed by the girl’s power of observation.
However , he decided to test her wisdom further. He went to the shepherd’s house and
ordered him to make a pair of reins from ash by the following morning.
The shepherd was puzzled as he knew this was an impossible task, but his clever
daughter reassured him and told him to go to sleep. Then she plaited some dry grass to
make a pair of reins. Once this was done, she placed the reins on the top of a large flat
stone, and set fire to them. The next morning , when the king returned he saw the reins
made of ash on the stone slab. He was pleased with the girl’s intelligence. He, however
set another test . He told the girl, ”Tell your father to come and meet me, but neither in
the morning nor in the evening, neither today or tomorrow”.
Once again the old shepherd was troubled, but his wise daughter had a solution
ready. She said, “ Father you can go to the palace at mid –night” This was exactly what
the old man did. He went to meet the king at his palace at mid-night. The king was truly
impressed with the girl. He was sure that he had found the right girl for his son. So, the
girl and the prince were married and they ruled the kingdom wisely.
