OVERVIEW: LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Good day! This module has been prepared in the with
the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) for
Junior Highschool Learners. This third module entitled
“Arts and Crafts of Thailand” introduces the arts and
crafts in Thailand. You will learn the salient features of
Luzon by showing the relationship of the elements of art
and processes among culturally diverse communities in
the Philippines.
➢ Analyze elements and principles of art in the production of
arts and crafts inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia;
➢ ldentify characteristics of arts and crafts in specific
countries in Southeast Asia
➢ Reflect on and derive the mood, idea, or message from
selected artifacts and art objects;

➢ Appreciate the artifacts and art objects of their utilization

INTRODUCTION:
The countries in Southeast Asia: Brunei,
Cambodia, East, Timor, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the
Philippines all share a tropical climate and a rich
and diverse flora and fauna.
Thailand is rich in culture and history. Thailand,
like the Philippines, has a tropical climate and is
blessed with an abundance of natural resources.
It was formerly called Siam and was later
renamed as Thailand in 1939. In 1949, it was
permanently called Thailand. Thai means "free
man," which is quite apt since it is the only
Southeast Asian country not colonized by the
Europeans. However, this does not mean that it
has been completely isolated from outside
influences. Thailand today has been shaped by
the interactions of different groups of people like
Indians, Chinese, Persians, and Arabs
and their distinct use in terms of art elements and
principles;
➢ Incorporate the design, form, and spirit of Southeast Asian
artifacts and objects in one's creation;
➢ Trace the external and internal influences that are reflected
in the design of an artwork and in the making of a craft or
artifact;
➢ Create crafts that can be locally assembled with local
materials, by local traditional guided techniques;
➢ Derive elements from traditions/history of a community for
one's artwork;
➢ Show the relationship of the development of crafts in
specific countries in Southeast Asia; and
➢ Show the commonalities ad differences of the culture of
Southeast Asian countries in relation to Philippine culture.

ACTIVITY 1:
Write SP if the statement happens in Sukhothai Period, AP if it is Ayutthaya Period, and BP it it is Bangkok

___1. The Thai visual arts are use bronze, bricks, and provide stucco as the medium.

___2. In this period, more ornate representation of the Buddha wherein his images were garbed in

royal garment and placed on top of elaborately decorated bases or pedestals.

___3. The establishment of the Krom Chang Sip Mu is to provide training tor the artisans or craltsmen.

___4. Buddha is portrayed to have a body with graceful curves and thin oval face.

___5. Traditional Thai paintings are rendered flat and in two dimensional.

___6. Gold leaves were used as decorations against the dark lacquered background.

___7. Thai's also used nagas, garudas, and yakshas as sculptural elements in their temples.

___8. Buddha's hand position or hand gestures called mudras also have meaning.
 ACTIVITY 2:
Write the similarities and differences between the crafts of Thailand, Indoneisa and Malaysia. Use Venn Diagram
below.

HOME-BASED ACTIVITY 1:
Create your own design of Filipino puppet using a recycled material. Once you are done, take a picture
of your output and send it to your teacher via Messenger. Your output will be assessed using the rubric.

HOME-BASED ACTIVITY 2:

Do a research on the traditional arts and crafts of a southeast Asian country that is not discussed in this
lesson. Make sure to include the following information and example in your research: Short History of a country,
painting history and examples, sculpture and examples, architecture and examples, and at least three cultural
product or crafts that country is famous for. Your handwritten output will be written in the space provided below
in this module.
