Encourage the activities necessary to combat discrimination and stereotypes associated
with age.
The aim is to create the necessary activities that eliminate the myths about the elderly
and discrimination towards this sector of the population. An example can be the
realization of activities that dismantle the myth that the elderly is rigid and inflexible,
that they cannot change or that they can no longer learn.
Benefits of intergenerational relationships
The benefits are many. For example, they increase solidarity and exchange between
different generations. They also contribute and share knowledge, values and
experiences.
Specifically, for the elderly the benefits can be:
✓ Improvement of self-esteem and mood, thanks to the maintenance of social
relationships with other generations.
✓ Greater vitality. Increase activity and energy to continue enjoying everyday life.
✓ Decreased feeling of loneliness as social relationships and activity increase.
✓ Integration. Older people feel that they belong, that they are integrated, that
they coexist in society.
✓ Maintenance of learning. The learning continues. Knowledge is expanded thanks
to the exchange that occurs between generations.
For the youngest, the benefits of maintaining some kind of relationship with the elderly
are, among others:
✓ Changes in the perception of the elderly. Your perception, your perspective
changes. Meeting and enjoying time with older people bring about a change in
their perception.
✓ To be able to access support networks. Thanks to these types of relationships,
their support networks are expanded and are not limited to those of the same
generation.
✓ Know the issues that affect older people. They are aware of the issues that affect
and concern older people.
✓ Increase social responsibility, empathy or self-esteem. With intergenerational
relationships they increase their values and their feeling of competence.
✓ Keep learning. Learning continues and their knowledge increases thanks to this
intergenerational exchange.
In older people and minors, these relationships are very beneficial since they include
the needs of education, the transmission of values or cultural traditions, the learning
of positive role models. Knowledge, experiences and skills are shared. And in addition,
cooperation, development and evolution of the elderly and young are increased.
What is intergenerational solidarity?
Intergenerational solidarity is mutual help between different generations. The
promotion of a culture of coexistence that fosters greater solidarity, social
participation and inclusion. Thus, all people at all stages of the life cycle will be
strengthened.
Every April 29, the Day of Intergenerational Solidarity is celebrated. A day to celebrate
the situations in which people of different generations live and enjoy themselves. A
perfect occasion to highlight the benefits of intergenerational relationships for
everyone involved. Connect generations for the benefit of the whole society. And for
this, the programs that are proposed aim to:
✓ Create meetings and events where all generations are participants.
✓ Create intergenerational spaces so that coexistence, support and mutual help
are possible.
✓ Schedule intergenerational leisure. Travel, historical routes, traditional games,
etc.
✓ Promote family support between different generations.
✓ Inform society about the value of these relationships.
