CANDIDATE’S CARD

SETTING: Hospital Casualty Ward

DOCTOR: Your patient has been involved in a traffic accident. His /


her condition is now stable but s/he has lost a lot of
blood and needs a transfusion.
TASK:

 Reassure the patient, answer any questions and explain the


importance of this blood transfusion.
 The chance of infection is very small
- sterile conditions, new syringes, donors are screened for
infection.

SETTING: Hospital Casualty Ward

PATIENT: You have been involved in a traffic accident. You were


not badly hurt but you lost a lot of blood. The doctor who
is treating you mentioned that you will need a blood
transfusion. You are now very worried.

TASK:
 Ask the doctor about the procedures involved.
 You are anxious about the transfusion. Perhaps you could manage
without it.
 You’ve read on the internet about people getting AIDS and other
infections from blood transfusions. You don’t want to take that risk.
