MODAL VERBS
Los verbos modales son verbos auxiliares que no pueden funcionar como un
verbo principal, a diferencia de los verbos auxiliares “be”, “do” y “have” que sí
pueden funcionar como un verbo principal. (Curso inglés, s.f.)
Como verbos complementarios que son, los verbos modales no funcionan sin
otro verbo. Este otro verbo siempre va después del verbo modal y está en la
forma base (el infinitivo sin “to”). No se conjugan los verbos modales y no tienen
tiempo.

VERBAL TIMES AND FREQUENCY ADVERBS
PRESENT SIMPLE
The adverbs used with Present Simple Tense are called frequency adverbs,
because they show how often an action is performed.
The present simple in English is one of the most important verb tenses since its
use is frequent in most of the interactions we have with other people. (Murphy,
2007)
Examples:
❖ I always help my mother.
❖ They are always tired.
❖ She always goes running.
❖ He never uses her English in class.
❖ I go to the cinema twice a week.
❖ He plays soccer every morning.
❖ I watch Netflix every night.
❖ I often read the newspaper.
PRESENT PERFECT
Examples:
❖ She has always been my friend.
❖ I have never worked with him.
❖ She has never studied English.
❖ He has just studied the lesson.
❖ I have already studied.
THE ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY IN A SENTENCE
Las reglas más importantes referentes a los adverbios de frecuencia en inglés
tienen que ver con la posición que ocupan dentro de la oración, dependiendo del
tipo de verbo.
Una persona que hable inglés con fluidez casi siempre contraerá tanto el verbo
“to be” como los auxiliares (de modo que “You are late” se convierte en “You’re
late”, “I have considered” pasa a ser “I’ve considered”, etc.). Si el adverbio
estuviera situado antes del verbo “to be” o de los auxiliares interferiría con la
contracción: por eso se coloca detrás de ellos.
14
ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY BEFORE THE MAIN VERB:
EXAMPLES:
I OFTEN DO exercises.
MORE EXAMPLES:
GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE:
Subject + Adverb of frequency + Main verb
15
ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY WITH MODALS AND VERB TO BE:
• When using an adverb with the modals or verb to be, we need to be
careful with the order because the adverb of frequency comes after it.
EXAMPLES:
He IS ALWAYS late.
Pero como todas las reglas tienen una excepción, no podía ser distinto en este
caso. Con las oraciones que usan el verbo to be, el adverbio de frecuencia se
ubica después del verbo.
GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE
Subject + Verb to be + Adverb of frequency
- There are always lots of people in the city center on Saturday nights.
- It’s often difficult to find a place to park.
- But our friends are never on time so it doesn’t matter if we’re late.
16
ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY WITH MODAL VERBS:
We put the adverb of frequency AFTER it and BEFORE de main verb Los
adverbios de frecuencia en inglés se colocan siempre después del sujeto y antes
del verbo principal EXCEPTO con el verbo “be” y los verbos modales, en los que
el adverbio de frecuencia se coloca después de estos.
EXAMPLES
: You SHOULD NEVER BE rude to customers
Esta misma regla aplica para los verbos auxiliares; el adverbio de frecuencia
entonces irá entre el verbo auxiliar y el verbo principal, de esta forma:
- I have never visited Turkey.
- He’s always taking things from my desk. It’s really annoying.
- You had rarely arrived late at work until yesterday.
GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE:
Subject + Modal + Adverb of frequency + Main verb
• But there are some adverbs of frequency can go at the beginning of the
sentence
17
• Sometimes, for reasons of emphasis we put the adverb of frequency at
the FRONT of the sentence.
These are: Generally – Occasionay . Normally
I sometimes have dinner at home.
A veces ceno con mis amigos. I have dinner with my friends sometimes.
Observa la frase:
Es una frase correcta, y sigue las reglas que hemos expuesto en el apartado
anterior. Pero también se puede decir:
18
Al trasladar la palabra “sometimes” al principio de la frase se resalta que este
hecho puede sorprender (quizá imaginábamos que el hablante siempre tenía
los sábados libres).

GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE:
