Unit 1 – Limits Week 3

Limits Week 3 Notes

February 14-18

Lesson 1.7 : Infinite Series

Lesson Objectives:
• Examine series where the number of terms approaches infinity

Recall Practice:
Determine the limit (if it exists) 4𝑥 2 − 6
1 lim
lim 𝑥→∞ 1 + 2𝑥 2
𝑥→∞ 𝑥 2

INFINITE SERIES
The sum of an infinite sequence.

DIVERGENT SERIES
Example: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ⋯

There is no answer to the sum of a divergent series (or we say the sum is diverging)
CONVERGENT
1 1 1
Example: 2 + 4 + 8 + ⋯

There is a single answer.

Does the sum appear to approach something?

SIGMA NOTATION

 is the Greek symbol capital Sigma

It is often used to represent the sum of something

𝑛

∑ 𝑡𝑖 = 𝑡1 + 𝑡2 + 𝑡3 + ⋯ 𝑡𝑛
𝑖=1

EXAMPLE 1

5

∑ 2𝑛
𝑛=1

∑ 𝑛2 + 𝑛

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCES
Geometric Sequences are based on multiplying each term by a common ratio r, starting
at term a.

The formula is: t n = arn−1

a) 3, 6, 12, 24, … r=

b) 2, 1, , ,… r=

INFINITE SERIES
A exists if |r| < 1. In other words:

EXAMPLE 2

a) Will there be an answer to: 
