Two students are discussing why they are not studying international business.
“International business doesn’t affect me,” declares the first student. “I’m going to stay here,
not work in some foreign country.” “Yeah, me neither,” agrees the second. “Besides, some
cultures are really strange. The sooner other countries start doing business our way, the
better.”
2-1. What arguments can you present to counter these students’ perceptions?
- International business is basically rooted in connection to meet the needs we
have in our daily lives. It affects us in a way that our country also adapts to changes
we learn from different nations. Needs such as technology, internet, clothing and
even down to the food that we consume are not entirely made from our home land.
The emergence of international business occurs in order for us to have access with
improved quality of products and services in sufficing our needs and at the same
time, opens windows for opportunities.

Imagine that you and several classmates are the top managers of a company seeking new
international markets. Select your company’s industry and product line, and then choose a
country to enter.
2-2. Is it important for the company to balance the need for global efficiency through large-
scale production with the need for cultural responsiveness through local product adaption?
- It is important to balance the global efficiency with that of local production adaption
to also protect our global competitiveness to other countries and prevent the
domination of foreign ownership in our country. We can resort on passing the
production globally if it cuts off costs and at the same time, protect the local product
adaption to preserve cultural responsiveness.
2-3. Will cultural differences between the home and host countries require alterations in
personnel or corporate practices?
- Cultural differences between the home and host countries will not necessarily
require alterations in personnel but is given proper settlement, understanding and
adapting corporate practices to ensure in maintaining a healthy working
environment. The differences in culture shows the importance of acknowledging
diverse perspectives and changes. This enhances communication within the
members of the organization and in return we can also learn from other host
countries different modes of productivity and understanding the market.
