A traffic impact assessment is done to understand the existing traffic condition around the site
and to estimate the traffic generation and parking requirements due to the development activities
and to identify possible transportation issues related to the proposed site development.
The TIA report consists of an evaluation of the parking arrangement, internal circulation and the
traffic management measures that are required to handle the present and anticipated future traffic
in the vicinity of the area.
The areas that need be addressed are as follows,
Existing situation around the considered area, traffic distribution and the details of the
development.
Traffic management.
Public transport and pedestrian facilities.
Traffic/trip generations.
Parking arrangement and onsite/off site vehicle circulation.
Conclusions and recommendations.
We can gather the following information from a TIA report.
What type of effect will the development have on the surrounding transport facilities?
The magnitude of additional traffic due to the development to the existing traffic.
How will the additional traffic effect the current traffic?
Recommendations to alleviate or minimize the impact.

The impact on the AM and PM peak periods of the surrounding road network will be
associated with the arrival and departure of the residents once the apartment finishes the
construction work.
Assuming that all the parking slots are full and that all the residents leave for work during
the AM peak and arrive back to the apartment during PM peak.
Assuming 80% of the residents go to work in Colombo direction and the remaining in the
opposite direction.
