6 Keys of Walking Safely

The risk of falling and fall related problems rises with age and is a serious issue in
homes and communities. According to the National Safety Council, falls account for
more than 8.9 million emergency room visits annually. Also, the number of fall
related fatalities of those 65 and older is four times the number of all other age
groups.

The 6 Keys of Walking Safely are shown below.

Aim High: Good eye lead time will help you maneuver obstacles and help you
plan your path.
Get the Big Job Picture: Consider everything you see as a potential tripping
hazard. Walk around objects versus over them. Reroute your walk path when
necessary.
Keep your eyes forward: Look forward to scan for hazards. Don't forget to
occasionally scan to the sides also. If you need to look behind you, stop and
look. Don't keep walking.
Leave yourself a path: Don't leave materials within your work area that
prohibit your ability to safely walk. Quickly wash or dry slipping hazards.
Make sure you step right: Be sure to calculate each step prior to making it.
This will help minimize the potential for slips, trips, and falls. Be wary for
objects hidden by mud or water. Be extra careful when stepping down to a
lower surface.
Avoid multi-tasking: Slip, trips, and falls typically happen when people try to
do other things while walking. This includes thinking about things versus
focusing on walking.
