Introduction –

Filiform corrosion is a special type of corrosion that occurs under coatings on steel [3] substrates.
The filiform is characterized by a definite threadlike structure and directional growth. Filiform
corrosion usually occurs between 70 degrees and 95 degrees F, with a corresponding relative
humidity range of 60 to 95%. At the high limits, blistering rather than filiform corrosion may occur
with some coatings.

I. SCOPE
- This method covers determination of the susceptibility of organic coated steel [3]
substrates to filiform corrosion formation.

- The method is limited to the determination of whether filiform corrosion will form on a
coated substrate.

II. SUMMARY OF METHOD

- Coated steel [3] specimens are placed in a corrosive atmosphere, per ASTM D2803-82
procedure “A” (non-salt), to initiate corrosion.

The specimens are then exposed to controlled temperature and humidity conditions
known to be conducive to filiform corrosion. The humidity should be set at 95°F, (95%
st
RH for the 1 , 300 hours, adhesion test and the last 200 hours of the 500 hour test
should be a 77°F±3°, 85% ±2%RH.)

III. APPARATUS
- Humidity Cabinet – Any insulated cabinet with suitable temperature controls, humidity
controls and air circulation system. The size and detailed construction of the apparatus
are optional but must be large enough to hold two head caps.

IV. TEST SPECIMENS

- The composition, surface preparation, and number of test specimens shall be agreed
upon by the test requester and the Lab. Brushed and or painted cold-rolled steel head
cap is the preferred test specimen

- Preparation of Test Specimens: The method of application, film thickness, curing, and
conditioning of the test surface shall be agreed upon by the test requester and the Lab.

V. PROCEDURE
- Inspect specimens for any spots before testing and mark.
FQ000003--Page 2 of 2

- For the first 300 hours place the specimens in the humidity cabinet so that they are no
closer together than 1 ½”, and not in contact with any steel [3]. Operate the cabinet at
95° ±3°F, and 95% ±2%RH.

- Inspect the specimens after one week into the humidity testing and at the end of the
humidity testing (Week 2) for development of threadlike filaments.

- The normal test period is three (3) weeks (500 hours), the last 200 hours should be
77°F±3° and 85% ±2%RH. After this test period, check all specimens again for threadlike
filaments.

VI. REPORT
Filiform corrosion will be noted as threadlike filaments. A standard method of rating failure
due to filiform corrosion is not available. The non-uniformity of filament growth in direction,
width, height, and frequency precludes a precise rating system. Photographs of filiform
failure are preferred for recording test results. Otherwise, a brief description of the filament
growth and their frequency can be made.
