GROUP ASSIGNMENT PROJECT

ENGINEERING MECHANICS (SRSD2093/SRTI2093)

Synopsis
This assignment is intended to develop a further understanding of the test carried out in
determining the parameters of statics. The majority of problems in the assignment depict realistic
situations encountered in engineering practice. Some of these problems come from actual
products used in the industry. It is hoped that this realism will stimulate the student’s interest
in engineering mechanics and provide a means for developing the skill to reduce any such
problem from its physical description to a model or symbolic representation to which the
principles of mechanics may be applied.

Aim
This assignment aims to prepare students for the selected fundamental course topic, which
might be appeared during the examination. The outcome is expected to nourish students with a
brief knowledge of various terms related to Engineering Mechanics in real engineering work.
Besides, the outcome is anticipated in assisting the colleagues’ comprehension suits to their
mode and level of thinking and ideas.

Objectives
The objectives are as follows:
To analyse and solve engineering work problems from its physical description to a model to which
the principles of mechanics may be applied.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this assignment students should be able to:
1. Determine Force Vector; To show how to add forces and resolve them into components in
Cartesian vector form and explain how to determine the vector’s magnitude and direction.
2. Analyze and Solve Equation of Rigid Body; To introduce the concept of the free-body
diagram for a rigid body and to show how to solve rigid-body equilibrium problems using
the equations of equilibrium.
3. Analyze and solve Structural Analysis; To show how to determine the forces in the
members of a truss using the method of joints and the method of sections, to analyze the
forces acting on the members of frames and machines composed of pin-connected
members.
4. Ability to apply techniques and skills in drawings, drafting and computer modelling into
industrial design work.
5. Ability to convey ideas, express rationale, and provide solutions clearly in written, verbal
and graphic in an appropriate into a report.
6. To demonstrate the implementation of generic skills such as team-working, life-long
learning, communication and problem-solving skill by documenting problem solutions in
coherent and legible engineering calculations.
