MILLING CUTTER SELECTION:

After Pre & Post machined conditions of component are drawn, the next step is
to select suitable cutters for desired operation. Following criteria determine
which cutter and inserts should be used:
1. Work piece material
2. Area of use
3. Stability of the system
Choose the appropriate group from any of the following groups:
 Steel
 Stainless steel
 Cast iron
 Nonferrous metals
 Heavy machining materials
 Hard materials
The area being machined also needs to be considered while selecting the
diameter of the cutter. Ideally, the diameter of cutter is 1.2 -1.5 times the
diameter of the component or its width.
In this project, the diameter of gear end is 56mm in forged condition and that of
flange end is 136mm. so the diameter of cutter for flange end should be:
1.5 X 56 = 84 mm.
Considering next standard size of cutter and also for finer finishing we select a
cutter of diameter 125mm.
Whereas for the flange end of 136mm:
1.5 X 136 = 204 mm.
Selecting the nearest standard cutter, we select a cutter of diameter 200mm.
The milling cutters used in actual practice are much more different than
that learned in text-books. It has no integral teeth, but has adjustable teeth.
These are called as ‘Inserts’.
