HISTORY OF KARATE
The empty hand fighting, commonly known as karate in Japanese writing and character was
originated from India, about 300 B.C., about 470 A.D., a Buddhist Missionary Monk, a certain Bhodiharma
Daruma, left Western India, penetrating mountain ranges including Himalayas, and crossing unbridges
rivers through complete and the impassable wilderness, to travel China to preached the teaching and
Bhuddhism. Since time, even present roads between India and China are dangerous; one can imagine the
greatness of Daruma‟s spirit and physical strength so great that he should have been able to conquer
with such courage and endurance these difficulties, a several thousand miles way alone. Daruma arrived
at the capital of Chienk‟ang in Liang where he was granted an audience by the Emperor Wu of China.
Years later he left the mountain, he stayed there in the monastery and taught Bhudhism for years.
Tradition relates a great multitude of followers fell one by one in physical exhaustion then set forth a
method of developing the mind and the body, telling them although the way of Budha, is the salvation of
soul, the body and the soul are inseparable.
To remedy the situation he set forth the method of training, a system of mental and physical
discipline embodied in the EkkinKyo (EKKIN “SUTRA”), with these methods, the monks of the Shaolin
temple were able to recover their spiritual and physical strength.
At the time, in other hand, the Emperor of China proclaimed all over the land of disarmed the people
from any forms of weapon, because of the potentials war lord uprising. He declared that any arms found
in possession was a crime against the state, and shall be executed and a punishment of death.
Yet the Emperor soldier failed to protect the people, particularly the peasant from the plundering of
the outlaws and Bandits.
Daruma, in order to protect his disciples, he taught and highly developed the martial arts of self-
defense; and it is said that these Shaolin Temple Monk came to be known of their respected reputation
through out of China of their courage, strength, fortitude as a formidable fighters of that time. In
later years, the art which they practiced come to be called Shaolin-szu “First Way” and formed the
basis for present day in China‟s national sport.
After teaching of this method originally proposed by Daruma spread to many other place, from one
country to neighbouring countries, and come to bear the name of its origin variation, and inter
preparation of instructions. It was this method that eventually reached the Ryukyu Island and developed
into Okinawa-te, the fore runner of present Karate.
Okinawa is the main island of the Ryukyu Island chain, which soatered like a stepping stones
southwest from the Southern Kyushu to Taiwan in the East China Sea. Okinawa was in contact with both
China and Japan, and probably the Chinese „first way‟ or known as Kempo was imported along with many
other elements of Chinese culture. About 1600, China replaced its diplomatic envoys to Okinawa with
military men, among who were mainly noted for their expertise in Chinese Kempo. The Okinawans took
akken interest in it and combined it with their native form of hand-on-hand fight known to clarify such
points as dates of appearance or what original organization existed, it is believe that Karate must have
come to Okinawa very early still, this Kempo has come to be known as martial unique to China.
About five hundred years ago, after the famous hero King, Sho-hanki, united the three-
territories of Okinawa, and a national policy was adopted under which the possession of arms and all
weapons by the people were forbidden. To ensure rule by law and to discourage any potential military
rivals, he seized all weapons in the kingdom and made the possession of weapons a crime against the
state. About two hundred years later, (in the Japanese Calendar, the fourteen year of Koicho 1609);
weapons in the islands has been confiscated by the government at the time when the Ryukyu‟s came
under the domain of the Satsuma Clan of Japan. It is supposed the perfection of Karate on the island, as
He was accredited as the first man to introduced Karate officially in Japan in 1917 and again in
1922 sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Physical Education Exposition.
Like other Japanese martial arts, such as Judo and karate; Karate fitted for Japans universities,
Colleges and Schools, as one of the major required subject in Physical Education.
The progress of the study of Karate in Japan became increasingly popular; many other expert from
China and Okinawa came to give instructions and to organized School of Karate.
In the early year in 1948, the Japan Karate Association was founded, as Funakoshi Gichen was the
Chief Instructor, that was noted for the increasingly popular and progress of Karate. Because of this
organization made it possible for the leading Karate men to pool their knowledge and ability and from
that time Karate was rapidly moving towards as the World Art.
In 1957, month of April, Spring time; the acclaimed father of the present day- Karate passed away at
the advance age of eighty eight. But the art he thought to the ten thousand men and women, young and
old ensure that world of karate will not die forever.
WHAT IS KARATE?
Karate is a Japanese word to its writing character from the translated original Chinese Kempo or
“fist way” the Suffix, the “Te” indicated the hand that permits oneself to defend himself with his bare
hands and first without reason.
And the prefix, the “Kara” means emptiness or nothing, like a clear mirror or crystal water that reflects
their surroundings without distortion, of the quite valleys that echoes a sound. It strived more for
spiritual enlightenment, than that of physical strength and techniques, so must one who would learn the
art of Karate, he should free himself of selfishness and evil thoughts, for only with clear mind and
conscience can be understand that which he learned. He should only strive to be inwardly humble and
outwardly gentle and moderate.
Karate literally means, is an art of empty hand fighting; the art is form, and the form can only be an act
when it shows through scientific illustrations, such as grace and mystical techniques. Essentially the art
of the said Karate is the art of self-defense. In simple words the art of Karate is designed for self-
protection and not for self-aggression. One effective stroke of Karate properly delivered, can kill a
horse or a bull, and what more to a man? But the main principles of Karate never allow violence if
possible.
The great ancient master of karate, Meijen and tetsujin, were known to use it violently
throughout their lives. Karate should not be violent, it should deny violent. The complete meaning of this
idea of Karate is a little difficult to convey. Because Karate has an inner meaning itself, it is a kind of
supernatural power and is obtained through mystical means.
To understand the deeper meaning of Karate, one should proficient first to learn the techniques, and the
method, and there is doubt that you should grasp the true meaning of what is Karate.
The tremendous offensive and defensive power of Karate is well-known. Karate is an art with
which one can defeat enemies with a single attack, either the use of fist or feet, without a weapon. The
value of the art defends on the one applying it. If its application is for a good purpose, then the art is of
great value; but it is misused, then there is no more evil or harmful art than Karate. The indiscriminate
use of the art of Karate would cause great public concern and one cannot deny its potential dangers.
However, it would be regrettable that pursuit of this mysterious art, of which one can properly proud.
The source of concern is largely based on the misconception arising from the instructor or poor
character, who thoughtlessly place the emphasis of training on the brutal concept of techniques; rather
than on the spiritual aspects of the art, and from the misbehaviour and poor attitude of Karate learners
who are achieving this art mainly as a technique of fighting, properly concerned and taught and practice
in the true spirit of Karate, this art is not only the antithesis of present danger, but it in fact admits
few equals as thoroughly noble martial arts.
Example the powerful drugs are dangerous. Poison is frightening; however there is one in the medical
world today who advocates harming drugs. The danger of power drugs and poison depends on their usage,
and when applied correctly, they can be of great benefit to well-being. Karate if improperly used is
certain dangerous and vicious. But for the same reason that it is dangerous, Karate too if properly
applied, can yield result of great value, to save one life concerned.
One who truly trains of this art, and actually can understand Karate is never easily drawn into a fight,
because one should know his potentialities as well as his opponent. As is said karate is an art of empty
hand fighting, and an art does not make a man, the man does make the art. Students of any art, clearly
including karate-do, must never format the cultivation of mind and body. Those who follow the way of
karate-do must consider courtesy of prime importance. Without courtesy, the essence of karate-do is
lost.
Courtesy must practice, not only during the Karate training period or inside the DOJO alone, but at all
times in one‟s daily life. The students must humble himself to receive instructions. He must always be
aware of and receptive to criticism from other.
He must be constantly introspective and must readily admit any lack of knowledge, rather than
pretending to know what he does not know. He must free himself from being presumptuous or self-
conceited person. A true karate-do must never forsake a humble mind and gentle manner. “Remember”, it
is a small minded person who likes to brag upon acquiring some small skill, and those with little knowledge
who carry on as if they were experts as childish.” Those who humbly follow Karate-do will develop
confidence, courage and fortitude.
The General aims of the most martial arts have the same objectives as follows.
1. For mental and physical development. It is quite nature to know the existence, history, founder,
development, perfection and progress of the subject we are interested before-hand. The
accepted scientific principle, the essential elements of some hidden knowledge or ideas which
sometimes we call it mystical techniques and, in mutual benefits to enrich our mental achievement
that developed upon grasping to our misunderstanding. All that cultivates to for mind
understanding constitute to mental development, on the other hand, the physical development of
Karate in such that is requires the body to move in all directions, in contrast, for example, to the
emphasis on the arm rowing or the legs jumping. There is absolutely no need for corner about one-
sided development of the body in karate, and the fact of uniform development may be considered
to be the benefits of karate. Techniques, form and hours of karate‟s drilling does not constitute
the physical development alone, but at the same time it develop the speed, reflexes, endurance
and stamina needed for every practitioner of karate.
Karate as a physical development can be practiced by both sexes; men and women, young and old,
strong or weak, and does not require specific time, area, time and even without a partner. These
examples indicate of maintaining one‟s health.
2. For sportsmanship; Karate, although said as a man‟s ultimate and deadly weapon can be classified
as a noble sports. It commands respect even toward opponent; courtesy control and obedient to
the rules and regulation embodied in the contest and tournament. It is a test of true
sportsmanship, courage, and clean conscience when one plays to be a victor or loser.
3. For self-defense; karate is a weapon, the ultimate one‟s weapon, it is not designed to harm other
people, but for self-protection, but we must try to keep out of harm‟s away. To protect oneself
karate is the method that will give the weak the power to defend themselves against stronger
opponents. The dedicated practitioner of karate can converts his body into weapon itself during
hidden sudden emergencies, when life and honor evolved.
the power that result an effective application of certain well-known scientific principles, along with the
constant practice, enable the karate man to find openings and execute the proper techniques at the
proper time, no matter how fast the movement of his opponent or partner. At an advance stage it is even
possible for a karate expert to sense the movement of his opponent before he takes place. Before
learning the various individual techniques, it is necessary to a clear understanding of the physical,
psychological, and the combined physical-psychological principles which underlined them all
PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES:
MAXIMUM STRENGHT
Any movement of the body depends on the muscular expansion and contractions. There many factors
involve in exerting maximum force control of these expansion and contraction.
(A)Force is directly proportionate to the degree of expansion and contradiction. This is the principle
behind; for example, the coil spring, the more the coil is presses down, the greater the force it exerts
when released. Many parts of the human body operate the same way.
(B)The striking power of the force is inversely proportionate to the time required for its application.
This means that in karate it is not the muscular strength used to lift a heavy object that is required, but
the strength manifested on terms of speed of muscular expansion and contraction.
In other words, force is accumulated in the form of speed, and at the end of movement, speed is
converted into a striking force. In scientific languages, force equals mass time the square of velocity.
CONCENTRATION OF STRENGHT
To perform any kind of physical heavy work, concentration of strength is necessary. Even a great
amount of strength will accomplish little if it is dispersed. By the same taken a small amount of strength
properly concentrated, can be quite powerful. It is no exaggeration to say that the practice of most
karate techniques is the practice of concentration of strength at the proper time and proper place.
Other things being equal. The shorter the time a striking force is applied, the more effective it is. This
element of concentration in terms of time is very important in karate, for it enables one to move
immediately into a series of techniques.
The greater the number of muscles brought into a play in performing a given movement, the
greater the concentration of strength. The force which can be exerted by hands and feet acting alone is
relatively small; therefore, the muscular power of the whole body should be exerted in such a way that
this strength is concentrated at the point of impact.
Maximum contraction of the body strength depends on the effective utilization of the resultant of
force produced by exertion of the various muscle. When the muscle is properly coordinated, the
resultant force is greater, when the act in opposite direction, it is lessened.
Concentration of strength depends not on simultaneous exertion of body muscles, but in their
exertion on the proper order. The muscle in the abdominal and the pelvic region are powerful but slow,
whereas those extremities are fast but weak. In order concentrate the force of both sets of muscles,
those of the abdomen and the hips must brought into play first, and this force transferred to the point
of impact, either in the hands or feet. This accounts for the common saying in karate to move the fist
and the hand and the feet later.
PSCHOLOGICAL PRINCIPLE
Since karate involves direct contact between two or more human beings, psychological factors play an
important rule. In many cases the psychologically stronger party wins even when he is outmatched
physically. Although this psychologically conditioning comes about naturally until it is almost second
nature in the course of karate training.
This term along with the one in the following sections was emphasized in the teaching of the ancient
karate masters. Both refer to the mental attitude required by facing an actual opponent. This refers the
need to make the mind calm, like the surface of undisturbed water.
To carry the symbol farther, smooth waters reflect accurately the image of all the objects within its
range, and if the mind is kept in this state, apprehension of the opponents movements, both
psychological and physical, will be both immediate and accurate, and ones responses, both offensive and
defensive, will be appropriate and adequate.
On the other hand, if the surface or water is disturbed, the image it reflects will be distorted, or by
analogy, if the mind is preoccupied with thoughts of attack or defense it will not apprehend the
opponents‟ intention, creating an opportunity for the opponent to attack.
This concept refers to the need to be constantly aware of the totality of the opponent and his
movement, just as moonlight shines equally on everything within its range.
With the thorough development of this attitude, the consciousness will be immediately aware of any
opening in the opponents‟ defense.
Clouds blocking the light of the moon are similar to nervousness or destruction which interfere with
correct apprehension of the opponent‟s movements and make it impossible to find an opening and to apply
the proper techniques.
HEN-O (Responding)
This concept refers to the correct apprehension of the opponent‟s movements and the conscious
adoption of the proper techniques in accordance with them. Both refers to this process are performed
as a single momentary act and proper to an onlooker almost as a reflex action.
Generally there are two types of Breathing techniques that are common known in the Sports.
1. The Western Breathing Techniques
2. The Oriental breathing Techniques
The Western Breathing Techniques which are commonly practiced in highly developed sports, they
inhaled through the nose (except in swimming and water exercise) and stored the inhaled air in their
chest, making the abdominal depressed and exhale through the mouth, expelling the inhale air, yet it
releases down to the abdominal region.
Whereas, the Oriental Breathing Techniques particularly in the world of principles that of a balloon. If
you put air inside the balloon, the balloon will become bigger and if you release the air inside the balloon
it become smaller.
When it applies in breathing, when they inhale through the nose, the air goes down to the abdominal
region, and stored there, becoming the abdominal bigger. When they exhale through the mouth, they
expelled the inhaled air from the abdominal region, release the entire inhaled down the navel, depressing
and contracting the abdominal muscles.
Karate as one of the Martial Arts who practice the original breathing techniques has several
breathing classification;
The normal breathing- is the type of breathing we do since birth time.
(I-BUKI)- Positive and Negative breathing this consists of quite inhalation through the nose where the
muscles are relax and a sharp exhalation when the muscles contract and tense to give more strength and
power during the release of a blow, kick or strike, this breathing techniques are commonly seen in
execution of karate practical in speed motion.
NOGARE- Positive, Negative and retention breathing.
This consist of sound inhaled it maybe long or short inhaled air in the abdominal region with the same
rhythm of inhalation time that took place and exhale through the mouth, with fierce sound, excelling the
entire inhaled air from the abdominal region, down below the navel, it maybe short or long, exhalation
making all muscles in a hard tense and concentration in a slow motion. The exhalation is in proportion to
the rhythm of inhalation and retention phase. These techniques are in advance formal exercise the
“Kata” by inhalation and exhalation it is mean proper breath control.
There are five methods of Controlled Breathing
1. Long inhalation; long retention; long exhalation; and long retention
2. Long inhalation; long retention; short exhalation; and short retention
3. Short inhalation; short retention; long exhalation; and long retention
4. Short inhalation; short retention; short exhalation; and short retention
5. Combination of the proceeding with the retention.
Any man who can mastered the proper breathing techniques can stand being surrounded by powerful
enemies; even at the time of catastrophe such earthquake, fires, typhoon, flood in his stride.
In addition, breath control is also useful in retouring calm breathing and peace of mind when one
exerted oneself more than usual in violation fight, in an emergency or hard work.
It is a fact that even how big a man, who loses control of his breath, become lighter, weak and easily to
defeat and small man who can control his breath properly, become heavier, strong inevitable. One who
losses his breath control, feels inferior and become coward, yet he who controls his breath properly
feels so solemn, siren, undistributed, peace of mind have a sense of self-confidence.
“They took our mace to break stones to build for our temple, then ley every hand turn into a hammer and
mace.” And so the legend says that they practiced old martial art was kept in a secret learning ; passed
from one generation to generations from one country to the neighboring countries, until it was opened to
the present world as one of World Art Self-Defense. The principles behind all hand foot techniques in
karate are the maximum concentration of the strength for the purpose of defense and offense. The
striking points are the locations of this concentration of strength such as the hand, the foot, the elbow,
the knee and even the head, that can be transformed into a powerful striking edge of contact with the
opponent‟s body.
