Have you ever heard of robots serving guests at a hotel? At the Henn-na Hotel in Nagasaki, Japan, robots
look after the guests from the beginning of their stay until the end. Henn-na means strange hotel in Japanese,
and when people arrive at the hotel, they understand how it received its name.
Probably the most ingenious feature in the hotel is the android robots. These machines look amazingly
human and they also copy human eye and arm movements very accurately. Upon arrival, one robot
welcomes the guests and another carries their suitcases to their room. Robot waiters serve guests their meals
in the restaurant and other robots clean the rooms. The robots can have intelligent conversations with people,
listen to their requests and answer their questions as politely as humans. They are made by the Japanese
company Kokoro. The president of the hotel, Hideo Sawada, is planning to order more robots from the
company because eventually, he wants them to run about 90% of the hotel.
In addition to the robotic workers, the hotel uses some of the most innovative technology in the world to make
the guest’s visit as pleasant as possible. For example, guests don’t need a key to enter their room because a
computer recognises their face and opens the door for them. When they’re inside, a radiation panel measures
their body temperature. Then, it regulates the temperature of the room to make them as comfortable as
possible. In addition, a cute little electronic creature called Chu-ri-chan turns on the lights and gives guests
weather forecasts and wake-up calls.
How expensive is the robotic hotel? Sawada wants to keep prices low, so that many people can enjoy it. So,
the rooms cost only about €40 or €50 a night.
