1. Introduction
This SOP explains about the steps for connecting console port / Com port of Synology
products of DiskStation (“DS”) with needful test devices for conducting checking or
troubleshooting.

How to Connect with DiskStation & RackStation by Console Port / Com Port
Except 12 bay DS which is equipped with a Com port, all other DS models provide a
console port which is to be connected with a console cable.
Connect console board with a console cable and an RS232 cable. (Fig.1)
Console cable end: For connecting with console port of DS or Com port of RS
RS232 end: For connecting with your test PC. If a USB interface is needed, connect
the RS232 plug with an RS232-USB convertor.

Example: DS115j
Remove the enclosure cover of DS before connecting with its console port. Console ports
on various DS PCBAs may be installed in different locations/directions by design. The red
wire of console cable is always to be connected with the Pin 2 of the console port. (Fig. 2)

2.5.1 Remove both the disk trays from the HDD chassis. (Fig. 12)

2.5.2 Release the screw on the rear panel (Marked by the red circle). (Fig. 13)

2.5.3 Release the two (2) screws on the bottom of the enclosure (Marked by the red
circles). (Fig. 14).

2.5.4 Then lift up slightly and remove the rear panel from the enclosure. (Fig. 15) Note
that at this moment the fan cable is still connected with the motherboard.

2.5.5 Unplug the fan cable connector (Marked by the red rectangle). (Fig. 16)

Fig. 17 shows the status after the rear panel is removed from the enclosure.

2.5.6 Lift up the rear portion of the enclosure cover slightly. Then hold both of its edges
and slightly bend them outwards to move the cover up, removing it from the
enclosure. (Fig. 18 and 19)

frame.

2.5.8 Use a small flat tool (e.g. A screwdriver of “-“ type) to lift up both the tenons of the
front cover slightly and bring them out of the rectangular openings on the top of the
enclosure. (Fig. 22)
