Steps on how to choose a garden site and to establish or start it.


1 When choosing a garden site there are factors to consider.
(A) State any three factors that you consider when choosing a garden site. (3)
Three factors that must be considered when choosing a garden are the water quality
and availability, soil type and fertility and field topography.
(B) Why do you want to establish or start a garden? Give two reasons under the
following benefits.
I want to start a garden because I want to to have ficinaical success through establishing
a garden.

 produces financial gain.
 Creates employment

 It’s therapeutic/healing
 It reduces stress

 Enriches the oxygen


 Acts as a wind break

(C) What kind or type of garden do you want to start? Succulent, fairy, vegetable,

I want to start a vegetable garden.
(I) Name any three examples of plants that you are going to grow in your
chosen garden? (3)
The plants that I am going to are carrots, cabbage, and broccoli.

(II) Give two advantages of growing the plants in your garden. (2)

By growing plants you able to enhance your finicial capability.


Furthermore, by growing plants a persons health can be effected for the better
bcease plants can combat stress and loneliness.
(III) Insert/put pictures of the plants or draw the plants you are going to grow in
your garden. (2)

(D) Where do you want to put your chosen garden? Backyard, own farm, patio,
rented farm (1)
I want to put my garden in my Backyard
(E) How will you protect your farm from stray animals, trespassing people or
thieves? (2)
a)You can protect your farm by keeping gates closed at all times so no one can
trespassing
b) You can protect your farm by having farm guards who watch over the farm
constantly.

(F)Who is going to do land preparation and state any two types of land preparation
stages/processes? (3)
The land preparation is going to be done using man power, tractor and animal.

Two types of land preparation include harrowing and mulching.

(G) Which tools are you going to use to do land preparation? Draw or put pictures of

(H) Pests, insects, diseases, weeds and nematodes are going to affect the growth of
plants and reduce crop yields or harvest.

(III) Discuss any four ways that you will use to deal with the pests, insects and

(IV) Somaliland is a dryland or semi-desert country and receives less than


200mm of rainfall per year making it difficult to practice horticulture. State any
two more challenges that are hindering or disturbing development of
horticulture in Somaliland and suggest any two ways to mitigate or solve the
challenges or problems faced by Somaliland horticulture. (4)

1) One challenge that is soil impoverishment. We can mitigate or solve this challenge by
incorporating cover crops by adding organic matter into the soil. Another way is by
planting fertilizer trees.
2) Another challenge that Somaliland faces is water availability. We can mitigate this by
delivering water trucks to the farm. Another way to mitigate this is by building a well.
