GRADE 9
Chapter- Improvement in Food Resources

Name: ________________________ Date: _______

Grade: IX Div: __________ Roll No: _____

1.(b) It encourages the build-up of diseases and pests that destroy that particular crop.

2.(c) competing for various resources of crops (plants) causing low availability of nutrients

3.(b) Both assertion and reason are true, but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

4.(a) Both assertion and reason are true, and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

5.Excess use of fertilizers causes environmental pollution as their residual and unused amounts

will become pollutants for air, water, and soil. It also initiates the process of eutrophication in the

water bodies, decreasing the soil quality by killing the soil microflora, etc

6.Crop variety improvement basically focuses on finding a crop variety that can provide a good

yield. Factors for which crop improvement can be done are

(i) Higher yield Every farmer do agriculture, so that he gets a good yield and he becomes

economically stable. Crops need to be improved, so that they provide good productivity per acre.

(ii) Improved quality Both quantity, quality should also be of almost importance for crop

improvement e.g., baking quality in wheat, protein quality in pulses, oil quality in oilseeds

should be given consideration, while selecting a improved variety.

(iii) Wider adaptability Varieties should be developed having wide adaptability, that will stabilize

its growth in different environmental conditions

7.Biotic factors such as pests, insects and diseases reduce the crop production.

A pest causes damage to our crops by feeding.

Weeds also reduce crop productivity by competing with the main crop for nutrients and light.

Similarly, abiotic factors such as temperature, wind, rain etc. affect the net crop production.

For example droughts and floods have a great impact on crops sometimes, destroying the entire

crop.

8 Option (c) will give the maximum benefits because good quality seeds, proper irrigation and

use of fertilizers is very helpful for the plants growth and crop protection measures are essential

for the high yielding of the crop.

9.Pasturage is the availability of flowers to the bees for nectar and pollen collection.

Pasturage is related to honey production because it determines the taste of honey and the quantity

of honey.

10(i) To combine long lactation of Jersey.

(ii) Disease resistance of Red Sindhi.

11.Genetic manipulation is a process in which genes of desirable characters are taken from a

plant and transferred to another plant by the technique of hybridisation. Genetic manipulation

helps in obtaining desirable agronomic characters like Dwarfness in cereals and tallness and

profuse branching in fodder crops.

It is useful in developing varieties with higher yield, good quality, biotic and abiotic resistance,

short maturity period, wider adaptability and desirable agronomic characteristics.

12.Guar is a legume plant. It is grown prior to sowing of crop seeds because to provide the soil
with proper amount of nitrogen for the next plant to use it.

13.The following steps will improve the quality and quantity of food

● Increasing the Plantation.

● Using Organic Pesticides in agriculture.

● Protecting the field plants from weeds.

● Provide proper Irrigation.

● Use quality Seeds.

14. The following points can be given in accordance with dairy farm

(i) Exotic breeds can be selected for long lactation period {e.g., Jersey, Brown Swiss).

(ii) Proper cleaning of the sheds should be done regularly.

(iii) Food Requirements are balanced food having all the nutrients in proportional amount.

Along with feeds, feed additives should also be given containing micronutrients that would

promote good health and milk production

(iv) Protection Against Diseases ,Vaccinations and proper medical treatment should be done at

regular intervals

15. Composite fish culture system is observed by Rakesh.

(i) In this system, combination of five or six fish species used in a single pond.

These fishes have different food habits and they do not compete for food.

As a result the food available in all parts of pond is used. e.g., catlas are surface feeders, rohu

feeds in middle zones, mrigals and common carps are bottom feeders and grass carps feeds on

weeds.
(ii) Main problem in such farming system is that many of these fishes breeds only during

monsoon and there is lack of good quality of seed.

To overcome this problem hormonal stimulation of fishes could be done, which ensure the

supply of pure fish seed in desired quantities.
